First pic is the wrong blades.

Second pic is the correct blades.

Notice the difference. Small, but makes a huge difference.ImageImage

I knew that most engines (with very few exceptions) ran clockwise.
When we cranked my dad's troublesome Peugeot (aren't they all?) we cranked clockwise.
But I wasn't aware that some cooling fans ran counter clockwise....

My dad's Rolls Royces and my Isuzu 4 ton truck have wheel nuts on the left that loosen clockwise.
Reason is, when driving, the nuts auto tighten, much like Oppies' do when he gets the repair bills...
🤣

We call them ‘left hand threads’ on things that aren’t ceilings!

Left hand threads on the left are not unusual at all. Can be quite entertaining . Years ago we sent a ford 9” diff in for a rebuild and the half shafts were put in on the wrong side.

After reinstallation the wheels, which had been neatly placed under the van with their nuts, were replaced.

Took the workshop assistant about 3 hours to get 2 nuts on, but he got them on...

As a matter of interest , burny gases (another technical term for you) have left hand threads on the regulators so that idiots can’t connect them to non burny gas appliances (more technical terms for you) and kill themselves .

Which is a pity. We need more Darwinism in the world...

Right...

Viscous fan blades...

TDI en V8 sn verskil.

Myne het TDI blades op gehad en al die warm lug terug deur die radiator gedruk.

V8 blades gefit en sover lyk als reg.

Low range in dik sand gery en mooi op temp gebly

Different fan is most likely due to the the two motors turning in opposite directions. One clockwise and the other anticlockwise.
I stand to be corrected.... but as far as I'm aware, since somewhere around the mid 1800s all engines have revolved clockwise when viewed from the 'front' - the drive being anti clockwise as viewed from the flywheel as a worldwide convention to allow all driven units to run clockwise as viewed from the power in / input shaft. even a traction engine (mobile steam engine) had a twist in the belt to reverse the drive from the flywheel to a vehcile mounted driven unit...
In this photo, you can actually see that the fan would turn the wrong way if the motor turned the right way ;)

Vriend van my het n ski boot met 5.7 corvette engine. Ook verander om verkeerde kant om te draai. Die ski boote ry in n ovaal track in water, en die veranderde rotasie van engine help boot na regte kante leun

There is no real reason for a motor to run clockwise, abd it’s pretty easy to make them run counter clockwise - twincams are very easy, single cams need a new cam shaft , and older motors need a revised distributor . 2 strokes are even easier.

The problem is that every pump or gearbox or attachment behind the flywheel needs to run ‘backwards’ from the convention. Even a gearbox or diff can’t just run backwards - the heel of the tooth often has a leading and trailing edge which makes it weaker in reverse.

So on a boat you need a counter clockwise screw - which isn’t an issue, most outboards can be ordered as left or right rotation. And I can’t say whether those are ‘backwards running’ engines or whether it’s a geared reversal ...

Well, it did cost me a headgasket rebuild...

Now, I have a new motor and cooling system.

the fan turns anti clockwise in this application because it runs off the 'back' of the multi vee belt - all the accessories running inside the belt will turn clockwise with the motor, those running outside the belt turn counterclockwise.

the tdi fan runs off the 'inside' of the driven belt and thus turns in the same direction as the motor.

As I say... not something I've ever had to worry about as we mostly fit electric fans when we start messing with stuff, and it's the first time it's dawned on me that the blades need to work in the opposite direction!
