Not enough torque from the milk-bottle engine and I bet it sounds crappy.

It will maybe sell in Mitchells Plain, but the soccer mommies in Constantia will sure as hell not be seen in one.

I like it though

It's a horrible copy of the Prado by a company still incapable of doing their own R&D & design.
320NM is way too little for a large SUV.
Cheapness is it's only attribute.

Well they couldn’t have copied the engine because Toyota don’t make any 4 cyl that powerful. They also couldn’t have copied the sunroof, hold assist, elec rear seat controller, heated seats, etc, because they are absent on the Prado.

320Nm is pretty sufficient. My 4.0L Jeep is 300Nm & a v8 Disco is 320 Nm. Neither battle offroad.

Unlike a diesel, it’ll have 320Nm throughout a much wider window.

Ultimately, all the usual SUVs will have to follow what the Chinese are already doing with their engines, like it or not.

The engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and power is up from 160kW to 180kW at 5500rpm and from 324Nm to 350Nm of torque from 1800-4500rpm. For the grease monkeys, the key tweak to improve output was to up the compression ratio from 9.6:1 to 1.0:1.

The H9 doesn’t have a huge amount of ground clearance at 206mm the specifications claim 206mm, but the owner’s handbook says 185mm, so, when Robert measured underneath the vehicle last year he found 225mm under the rear differential and 185mm under the front bash plate...

That’s pretty good clearance for that vehicle type. FJ Cruiser is 190mm at its lowest point.

The problem with the 185 mm under the front bash plate is that it is not constant but reduces when the front suspension compresses - at the foot of a dune, for instance. The joys of IFS ..................

Should be interesting to see what it sells for.
The current Haval range, as well priced as it is, is not exactly what I would call cheap.

I read that they don’t want to be too much cheaper because that would diminish the image they are trying to project in terms of where it fits into the market.

So far I haven’t come across anything negative in relation to it’s offroad ability.
The aussies & kiwis seem to rate it very highly.

The newer spec motor they use in the current H9 has improved over the old unit. Kw is 20 more, now at 180. Torque is up from 320 to 350 Nm. They changed the compression ratio mainly. Fuel consumption has improved by 10%.

Interestingly, it’s crawl ratio is about the same as a 300 Defender & much better than some Jeeps & the usual Japanese suspects. It’s also better than the Prado.
