How practical is a Iveco 4x4 really?

The past weekend we had a some show outside Stellies.

Every major Caravan, Tent, anybody that has something to do with camping or 4x4'ing had a stand. Among them was Iveco. They had three custom vehicles there.

We made the mistake of getting into the 4x4 with all the bells and whistles. The salesmen also stated that they customize it to your liking, which the brochure and the website confirms.

Now. I always said that the day I am finished with towing a caravan, the only logical next step would be to get a Iveco 4x4 kitted to my wife's liking.

How practical are these vehicles? I can see it as a fantastic over lander but not so much for 4x4'ing. It must have a really bad turning circle? Ground clearance isn't a problem.

Anybody with some experience with this vehicle?

I’ve driven one .

The double transfer case gives a massive overall reduction which makes it incredibly good for 4x4ing.

The downside of that is that in heavily laden state with double low engaged, the less mechanically sympathetic people of this world have been known to twistvoff half shafts .

It’s got a surprisingly good turning circle , it’s pretty nimble, certainly better than a cruiser with a trailer attached. It is high, and you sit high which tends to make you feel like it’s top heavy but (depending on the body) it’s not at all.

Spacious, comfortable , easy to drive

Tuffstuff has an Iveco Daily 4x4 recovery vehicle
I spoke to the Great Herman Engel about it.
He said he could drive it all day.

I dunno about the Camper versions. But the standard Iveco Daily 4x4 stands 2.4m high and wont get through standard openings.
So a normal garage or carport and most underground mall.parking is out.

I believe the standard one costs about R800k...

The only two negatives I can see with this is:

1) You over build the Camper and it ends up top heavy.
2) You get charged for a "truck", when crossing borders and entering parks.

Don’t forget - if you register it as a motorhome, it’s the same as a car - TARE up to 3500kg makes it a light motor vehicle . You only need a B licence (EB if towing) and fees are as for any other car at toll gates, licence dept etc.

Don’t know about other country’s parks, but in SA it’s an LMV.

So yes, it’s all about how you kit it ...

I was chatting to bugs about it a few weeks ago.

He’s got a new bakkie with 250k of kit on it, towing a bushlapa that’s also got a heap of kit in it .

Say 700k for a new bakkie, 250k for kit, another 250k for the trailer. 1,2bar and where he goes the bakkie isn’t up to it.

As Andrew says , around 800k gets you the twincab Iveco chassis cab, it’s about 750 for the single cab. That’s some decent change for a body - and it’s a lot more convenient .

It is quite a bargain, when placed next to a comparable Mog

Hell, compared to any twincab on the market.

3 diff locks
Double transfer case
37s as stock
3.0 turbo diesel that is actually a proper truck motor
Genuine 3500kg towing capacity (if you get the tare just right)
2800kg pay load if you use it as a truck

It even has an engine cover ...

It’s got all the abbreviations top...

Iveco Eurocargo 4x4 truck is a mere 850k plus VAT. makes me wonder why people use things like a 76 Cruiser pick up for overlanding!

IIRC these trucks are not allowed into Bots parks or the "offroad" paths of Sanparks?

They are awesome though.... If only I did some consulting for VBS....

the full trucks aren't allowed in.

I'd be interested to know if the Iveco Dailys are dealt with - as I say, if they are properly done and registered and have a Tare under 3500kg, they should be dealt with the same way as an Uno....
