I'm busy planning a retirement bakkie. Any negatives regarding the last Nissan Patrol pickup?

Patrols are very tough and nice 4x4`s.

The Pro`s.
1. Reasonable priced.
2. Very Reliable.
3. Strong running gear.
4. Comfortable ride for a SFA 4x4.
5. 4.2 TD engine good for 1 mil km if looked after.

The Con`s
1. Most of the 4.2 Patrol bakkies are around 20 plus years old.
2. Nissan agents does not stock most of the critical parts. I know there is a very good support network within the Patrol community.
Sad side is spares are not available immediately. I am aware of Patrols stranded for some time before being sorted out.
3. The 4.2 engine is a pre-chamber indirect injected turbo diesel best to be left in stock trim. I have yet to hear about a modified 4.2 that can operate under full power for extended periods before EGT pulls the plug.
4. Aftermarket accessories is expensive due to the low volume of Patrol pickups sold in SA. Most of the nice stuff needs to be imported.

But I guess a good sample will still give many years of good service.
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

Jake's, I'll tell you what I tell anyone who wants to buy a Nissan, Land Rover or Ford 4x4:

It costs less.
Is more fun.
Will last longer.
Is less embarrassing &

Have you considered a 2nd hand Pajero or Amarok?

The 4.2 was prone to overheating when towing as well as some developing chassis cracks

I have considered a lot of second hand products:

- Mitsu Triton, Nissan NP300 YD25 and Isuzu are attractive options but too weak for farm use
- Amarok not a real 4x4 and overpriced
- Nissan Navara is shyte
- Toyota Lux.......<spit>
- LC79: WAY overpriced and in my price bracket, been pulled through some Freestate farmers bum

Ek het 3. So no het oom al gehoor van 3, so daardie punt is nie meer geldig

Well, this thread is moot because I had to buy a GeldWasMin as the Tata went to Bakkie Heaven.

But Reenen should know not to argue with Allknowing Grips. The fact that Reenen has turbo'd more TD27 and TD42 IDI engines than anybody else on this forum doesn't hold any merit to him.

Ford Transit engines in Pumas also can get bit too hot & bothered under heavy load in Kalahari etc so the canny Landymen put a bigger intercooler in etc …
maybe Patrollers should try that ?

Land Rover was stupid to use a Ford engine, end of discussion. We can start talking about the TDV6 Lion engine as well.

Thanks for the Allknowing compliment  Also I see no reason to argue with Reenen.

Also I go out on numerous 4x4 trips with lots of different 4x4`s. I see things happening around me.

Turbo'ing a 4.2 Patrol engine Does NOT cause them to run hot.
If it did those guys would fit Mad Man systems to monitor EGTs and upgrade the cooling and cut the pumper to improve airflow.
No Patroller has done that! :D

We actually have the "Patrol Whisperer" on this Forum.

… reduces inlet air temp but also enriches the cylinder mix
for more power …
… on pumas afaik a bigger intercooler results in a lower running egt and engine temp …
If one just keeps running foot flat (!?!) then maybe temp would end up higher off even higher power output
… but who wants to do that ? ( maybe the ‘holics ?!)
