When I answered previously I forgot to add some sweet sounding aircraft motors.
The big multi-bank radials have a charm of their own, but I still feel that the Rolls Royce Merlin and it's later duratives must be the best sounding airborne fuel burners. When a Spitfire of Mustang flies over at full gas, you can't not enjoy the sound.

Then a 21l Detroit V16 four turbo diesel on a dyno run at full power is something sending shivers down your spine
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

I am biased. The sound of a large capacity petrol V8.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-4uj3nVDUs
That needs at least a stage 3 camshaft mod!

Henry that 347 is running a cam far beyond what we call in SA stage 3. When I were into v8 building V8 engines I found that there were very few real experts out there. I have joined the American V8 Engine builders association in 2012. Have done extensive training in cams and exhaust systems as I find it the field lagging the most expertise.

The engine in the video is running a roller cam with 17mm valve lift on a roller cam conversion on high flow AFR heads with 2inch intake and 1.6inch exhaust valves. Only thing stock is the engine block. Not even one OEM bolt left.
But you never revved it Christo! Come on, give me more sound vibes!

But seriously, you do know your stuff then. Great job on that mill!

You are correct. Pity it lasts only a few seconds.

I reckon a 6 cylinder turbo-diesel is very nice.
For petrol, old school V8s with push-rods can't be beaten when they're well tuned with a decent exhaust. Maybe just me, but the OHC V8s just don't have the same noise.

If you have a look on YouTube, you can find video's of guys doing demonstration runs with Merlin motors on stands with a cut-down prop. Guy Martin nearly demolished his workshop when he took too much power and it ran away through the one wall.

Probably one of my least favourite sounds. A Ferrari v8 small block.

Pah, the Hummer had a small block engine. Grips and I are talking about REAL stuff, like the 426 Hemi. 325s are considered small engines. :D

Sorry but they were rubbish. I got more performance and better fuel economy out of a 3.0L Ford Essex V6. And the Ford didn't need carb tuning every weekend and didn't eat its cam shaft every other month. Buick was laughing all the way to the bank when Rover bought that POS.

Grips will verify.
