Sexy sounds (generated by vehicles, let's get that straight!)

There is always a sound generated by a vehicle that turns us on (or am I alone?).

For instance, the best sounding starter motor I ever heard was that Disco HSE that Chris De Wet had for use one weekend. It sounded like a jet turbine starting up in fast forward! Magic! I even asked him to switch of and start a few times! I must mention I cringed at the first Fortuners. Massey Ferguson!

Then engine sounds.
The venerable Toyota in line six fitted to the 76/79 Cruisers does it for me. Also the Ford 5 cylinder diesel.

Exhaust roars.
Nothing beats a big bore petrol V8 high cam on idle and at 7000 rpm. Well almost. An in line 6 petrol by BMW at 6000 right up there.

Real men love the sound and smell of a Big Four diesel idling.

The worst sound is an F1 car live.
I went to the Malaysian F1 GP many years ago, those cars scream like a thousand parched cats being scaulded by hot lead.
Those cars sound like they need thick engine oil and a proper exhaust system...

A highly tuned 2 stroke motor at full cry. Add to that the smell of Castrol R, it's an intoxicating mix. The 500 GP bikes are amazing.
For 4 stroke motors, the F1 motors from the Ford Cosworth DFV through to before the change to hybrid power plants. You can actually feel the sound as one of that era cars come past you.

For me the almost eneven purr of an old school V8 is music to my soul. The Chrysler Srt 10 and Cruiser V8 sounds come close, but I completely despise the Geländewagen and Amg sound.

While the sound of a v8 cruiser is really nice and there’s not much wrong with a nice pipe in a V6 the howling scream of a Ferrari sports car does it for me. Pure listening pleasure. If only they made a 4x4.

The best is a Straight 5 Cylinder, 3.7L Vortec Power Plant, in the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), fitted with fabricated pipe manifold and dual Venturi waste gas exhaust tail pipes, operated by non other than the Mr LX. The only other better sound will be the Alpha, V8 5.3L Power plant in the HUMMER H3. Those who have been lucky enough to be in close proximity with these rugged, magnificent vehicles will attest (Including Mad Manny and Bush Walker, who will never publicly agree :-) )
Coming from a Massey Furgurson (3.0 D4D) Hilux, I'm sure you can comprehend the start difference.

That needs at least a stage 3 camshaft mod!

Henry that 347 is running a cam far beyond what we call in SA stage 3. When I were into v8 building V8 engines I found that there were very few real experts out there. I have joined the American V8 Engine builders association in 2012. Have done extensive training in cams and exhaust systems as I find it the field lagging the most expertise.

The engine in the video is running a roller cam with 17mm valve lift on a roller cam conversion on high flow AFR heads with 2inch intake and 1.6inch exhaust valves. Only thing stock is the engine block. Not even one OEM bolt left.
