If I had to tow my 4x4 to a venue I'd realise I bought the wrong 4x4...

Seriously, I don't want to tow 2.7 tonnes.
I towed a Patrol 4.5 GL-series from Brits to Pretoria once (cross-threaded sparkplug in number 6 cylinder) and that was hell - even for me, the tow-er. I do not know how Danie, the tow-ee, managed with no power steering and no vacuum assist on the brakes.

I have an fold-able a-frame for mine.
I gonna stick it on the front for long trip.
Just so much easier for a helping hand to nearest civilisation...but that's just me.
Also depends on what you break. With a-frame you need the four wheels....

Trailer! If you are going to tow 2tons etc… Make sure it is braked and safe. Trailer all the way. Even just rent one if you are only going to use it once every year, or two times a year.
Second option would be A-Frame. Anything except Piggy Back.

When I was busy with the rebuild of the SJ410 that I had, I did quite a bit of research on the legal aspect of towing a vehicle using an "A"-frame. I saved some of the relevant info on the computer so I'll have a look for it when I've got it on again. From what I remember, towing with an A-frame doesn't fall under the same regulations as towing a trailer with regards the vehicle weight and having working brakes. Before I sold the SJ410 project I'd wired in a female trailer plug inside the engine bay so that I could feed power to it's own tail lights and indicators from the tow vehicle. I'd also modified the ignition lock assembly so that the steering lock couldn't lock the steering column with the key removed.
