The previous Jimny lost a few sales to the Daihatsu Terios which was better in every way except off road.
It was bigger, more comfortable, more powerful, smoother, more stable etc.

But Daihatsu left SA (as did Chev, Citroen, Foton, Chery, most of Tata etc).

For those who don't know the Daihatsu Terios is also badged a Toyota Rush in some markets (Much like the Navara / Alaskan type of badge replacement engineering).

There is a NEW Daihatsu Terios/Toyota Rush which was launched recently in Indonesia & Thailand.

Toyota SA is considering bringing it here soon, BUT, Suzuki need not fear because...
* The new Terios Rush is basically a pimped Avanza.
* It has the same old 1.5 Engine & Gearboxes from before.
* It looks like a Honda BRV.
* It's RWD Only (I can't find any mention of a 4x4 version anywhere).

So at least the 2019 Jimny won't have any competition...

It doesn't look like the new Jimny can be much bigger than the current one.

These cars are Kei cars.

Kei is a tax incentive in Japan for vehicles who conform to certain length, width & engine restrictions.

Often a Kei car will be sold in Japan without fenders & with a very slim bumper to make it conform & even thespare mounted under the vehicle rather than on the back.

For other markets bigger bumpers, fenders, rear mounted spare wheels etc. are then added.

Bigger engines are also added for export markets.

The current KEI Car Regulations:
1 October 1998 3.4 m Long x 1.48 m wide Engine of max 660 cc with max output of 47 kW.

The current Jimny has dimensions of 3 545 mm x 1 600 mm which exceeds the KEI dimensions, but this is due to the bumpers & fenders.

So, there is really nothing Suzuki can do to make the new Jimny any longer or wider - they can only go higher, but it'stop heavy as it is...

So, how does this new one compare safety wise to the old one?

Did they ever crash test the old one?

I don’t think it would matter much because the people that buy them have other priorities. It’s not as if potential owners have the option of buying something else, because the Jimny doesn’t have any competitors.

They have cult-like status like Defenders, Wranglers or even Cruisers. It’s a miniature version of them.

They are primarily for offroad & will get away with not being weighed down with electronic aids because they still have old school 4x4 axles, etc.

They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but they do what is said on the box.

They’ll never sell in great numbers for these reasons but they will do what they are built for very well. Plus the resale is pretty spectacular for the people that eventually do want to sell.

But they aren’t for sissies

So not a lot of abbreviations for safety?

I remember my Hilux. No airbags. We would have died like real men

I occasionally drive my KB280DT - Zero safety acronyms.

People who say they won't buy a Jimny because it lacks acronyms should just buy a Platkar.
Acronyms like ESC & BAS etc. won't help in a bad accident, especially if it's the other guy who drives into you...

I actually saw a VW on the N1 yesterday morning. It was a small 4 door up. Lots of abbreviations.

It was in an accident.

Yip. Having AIDS doesn’t guarantee that an accident won’t happen.

But a good driver doesn’t need them as much anyway. It’s better not to try stick it into gaps where it doesn’t belong in the first place.

It wasn't tested in Europe, but it had a JNCAP (Japanese) rating of 4. The Grand Vitara with 6 airbags, ESP etc also had a JNCAP rating of 4.
