Tyre Size Option … Mix ‘n Match …
I have for many years fitted 235/85/16 ATs
to my rig and invariably BFGs and or GYWs
However it has come to pass that the price
of quality AT tyres has now gone up excessively …
… say R4.5k+ each ….
… and so Im looking at buying a pair of
Dunlop GrandTrek Muds (R2.6k ea) to carry both as spares
and initially fit, to one axle, when I go on a trip in Muddy Terrain etc
Many say such a 2-ply tyre is too vulnerable to side cuts etc … esp when deflated and they bulge out like …
So Im going to buy a pair of 265/75/16 MT Grandtreks
which are 12% wider, ‘more radial’, and deflate them less,
than the tyres on my other axle.
What harm can there be and what do you guys say ?

I understand you want to save R4k, but that is a kak idea.
Never mix 'n match tyres.
Buy 5 of the stronger ones and be done...

I will always recommend the same size tyre, unless you're a top fueler drag car...
Your drive train will thank you for running the same size tyre all round, especially when powering all 4 wheels

Chas if you are looking to spare a few Ronts rather do 4 good new ones on all four corners and keep 2 of the best for spares.
Nothing wrong with Dunlops.

… theres 0.3% difference in rolling circumference
and if eg the larger tyres are inflated say 0.25 bar
less than the ‘smaller’ the difference is surely academic.
Theres probly greater drag from the wider radials when
slowing/freewheeling … not sure how relevant that
would be.
Furthermore I would ordinarily still run on high quality
tires on the open/tarred road etc.
My standard inventory of quality tyres is 4 on the
vehicle and 2 on my trailer and a further 4 spares in fairly
good condition. All ATs except 1 HT
One other aspect is that strong sidewall tyres, imo,
dont like to roll deflated for long … a lot of working of
the sidewalls and they get hot… imo … and, Ive heard,
Can get internal parting & separation of the plys etc

So you've made up your mind.
Do it.
Why waste our time?
This is not that other Forum where we start Threads to ask for advice we ignore...

… because I dig a bit deeper into the aspects that may
be relevant and discuss around the topic does not mean:
‘Ive made up my mind’
or
‘ask for advice that I (then) ignore’
Dont be so presumptuous,
… rather try and meaningfully contribute & be constructive,
however difficult you may find that to do.

Chas buy what you had before (or the best that suits your demands) even if it costs more, R2K per tyre over 100k km is nothing, that’s 2c per km extra.

Chas, what are the condition of your current 5 tyres?
Are they the same?
How much wear?
When will they be due for replacement?

I would say the 4 tyres on my 130 are at about 3/4 life
and the 2 spares I carry are older/more worn
the two on my trailer are in barely worn
and I have a new BFG and mid aged spare there.
None of my tyres would warrant a fine
though dont know their age…
Im not back against the wall needing new tyres
but the prices are going up so its better to buy/ transition now than in a year or two.
Got a lot of flexibility wrt current inventory.
Feel I should transition to suppler mud terrains now
as Im not commuting to work etc on expensive ATs .
Remember Im a retired guy,
dont buzz around in my rig
Like a blue arsed fly …

In that case, I would do nothing at this stage.
Wear all 6 down evenly/equally etc.
In the mean time, save up & when the time comes, buy 6 shit hot 3ply sidewall muds.
They will last you until either you or the Landie expire.
