12V Electric Blanket

#1

Post by BushWacker »

A while back Bugger alerted us to the availability of 12V Electric Traveling Blankets at Midas.
So last week I went in and picked one up... ... quite pricey though at R600 ...
Its a thinnish rectangular fleece of 100 cm by 145 cm and comes folded in a carrybag smaller than Mannys BriefCase.
With this cold spell I tested it using a wanked out battery I keep round the house for powercut lighting, cellphone charging etc

Works quite well and lasted about 4 hrs before the battery faded ... think it draws 5A at max.

It probably needs TLC to last so Ricoffy etc would need avoid over active antics, using it as Judo mat etc etc

Chas, if R600 is 'pricey' - what would you consider cheap? R8.75?

But it does sound small @ 1000mm x 1450mm

These blankets are actually seat warmers I suppose.

Bugger bought 2 some time back and he said that is what they were advertised as.

Thus "small" for a bed.

I also have a normal double electric blanket (which I could also carry), and a 1500w inverter and 1 or 2 large batteries, etc. etc.
… and yes that works just fine, but this should be much simpler and easier, smaller, no inverter, quicker set-up etc.
& equiv to about mid-setting on the normal E—Blanket which is about 7-10 the volume to pack…

Kurt, chill. Chas bought an electric blanket just in time for summer.
By the time he gets to use it he would have misplaced it...

adding....

I also only use the electric blanket to pre-heat the bed, so it only needs to run for 15 mins or so while you go have a hot shower... no need to drain you battery in 4 hours or less...

I also have a small cheapie modified sine wave inverter that powers a 220v electric blanket perfectly, worked like a bomb in my RTT

… agree Geoff … it was just an icey morning
and thought appropriate to test the blanket and see if even an old (small 60AH) battery (that can no longer even kick over the platcar engines) would suffice !

Last time in that mountain in pouring icy rain, I had a great sleep in my sleeping bag. In a dry tent. No crazy running around outside. Just be prepared
