Dust proofing your load bin

#1

Post by Shane »

So it's winter, I'm bored and this forum is way too quiet!

I'll be rubberizing my loadbin this week - if all goes well.

But I live on a farm - and these hilux bins suck dust better than the electro-lux's of old!

So I need to look at dust proofing. Specifically the tail gate.

Google has delivered few options - which vary between steel plate & rubber options to rubber only options.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has experienced this problem - so what did you fit and are you happy with it?

I think the most important thing is to ensure
a positive pressure within ... ie filtered and controlled intake or ingress of air into the canopy, from say
behind the front cab (?) so that any inflow is
dustfree and outflow is restricted ...
I'm sure caravan guys will comment here ... ?

You mean SUD - suck up dust!

Chas,

If I'm not mistaken my canopy has one of those positive pressure vents on the front.

But they are less effective when you crawl along on dirt roads.

And those tailgate gaps are huge!

What about spraying some expanding foam into the cracks?

Not an option. I'll take a pic tomorrow then you'll see why.

Many moons ago before anyone had thought of making kits I did my own mod with bits of rubber bought from Pro Auto Rubber.

It was maak n plan but made a huge difference.

Positive air flow is essential. Even cars have this. Try close your vents thinking you are keeping dust out. However this only works with cars that have a cabin filter.

That kit from Takelot looks up to the job.

Just saw that my canopy has a built in vent for positive pressure.

I like it!Image

My Defender is some 20 years old now,
and I lie not that for the first 10 years
when I didnt have a canopy on it,
a big problem was a water filled bin
... it just didnt leak out ...
kids used to swim in there, seals were
way better than on my doors.
So quality rubber sealing can be v. good.
So Shane , I think , by sealing the back hatch,
canopy seating etc you'll rather stop the escape
of air than inlet of dust, by building and
maintaining positive pressure.

His problem, as he has mentioned before, is slow driving around the farm so he won’t be able to build any positive pressure.

yes, pref with a filter ...
esp for when he drives
just fast enough to raise dust
yet slow enough not to build canopy pressure ...

If you fill the entire canopy/bak space with expanding foam filler then no dust can get in anymore because there won’t be space for the dust
