Let's talk Traction Control
So my bakkie has TC.
My old parraffin models didn't so it's new to me.
I searched the interwebs to figure out the value of this system but came up short. Another forum arranged two days on which they tested the difference between TC and difflock and yes, difflock is better.
So why would Toyota go to the expense of fitting this function if difflock (which is "better") is fitted anyway?
Could anyone enlighten me?

I do not rate the traction tests on the other forum high. It is a fun event and well orginized. The orginisers arrange it to keep vehicles damage minimum which is good.
The downside is it makes the soft roader owners Windgat and they walk away thinking soft roaders are on par with hardcore 4x4's.
My son owns a 2.8 Gd6 4x4 Supercab Hilux.
He have done some serious trails and trips with it. Dune driving the best is with the locker and traction off.
On some Rocky trails TC might be an aid.
Thing the value is evident on slippery muddy roads.
He had it on Berakah and the Diff lock were of greater aid.
Maybe the best to contact him will pm his details. He will only be available on Tuesday as he is currently on a hunting trip

As I said on another Thread on the same topic on why manufacturers prefer TC to DL:
Many 4x4's come out with TC only & no DL, no Chinese 4x4 has DL, in other countries many 4x4's that get DL here in SA come out in other countries with no DL (The KB6 D-Max came out in Oz sans lockers)...
If manufacturers had their way, very few vehicles would get DL...

The problem is the guys cause kak with Lockers and this comes back at the manufacturers, so, once ABS had become common it was easy to fit TC (which is just ABS working in the opposite way).
The advantages of TC over DL is it's more idiot proof & is cheaper...
Ideally we (Off Roaders) should all drive SFA vehicles, but currently only the Land Cruiser 70 series, the Jimny and the Wrangler are available with Solid axles, everyone else has gone IFS..

TC react to wheelspin but DL prevent wheelspin and that is better, I think. But overall DL is over rated, expensive and they break. And often one must install a compressor system to operate the DL.

You cannot have ASC without TC. TC is the basis of ASC.KurtG wrote:Let’s not mix up ASC with TC on this thread please, they are two very different things.

But the application between 4x4’ing in low range and not losing it around a high speed corner is very different.Scratch wrote:You cannot have ASC without TC. TC is the basis of ASC.KurtG wrote:Let’s not mix up ASC with TC on this thread please, they are two very different things.

ASC cuts power and TC uses the brakes to transfer torque, very different.

In the context of the OP, he questions why would Toyota put TC on his bakkie. The reason is because TC is the basis for ASC, all modern vehicles come with ASC.KurtG wrote:But the application between 4x4’ing in low range and not losing it around a high speed corner is very different.Scratch wrote:You cannot have ASC without TC. ALL these systems run off ABS.
DL is superior in most cases off road,
But TC is 4 wheel while DL is, mostly, only on the rear axle.
When TC first came out, they would set it so activating the DL would cancel TC.
But now vehicles have it so that the front TC will still work when rear DL is activated.
The VW Amarok was the first to do this.
They even called the TC on the front axle "Electronic Differencial Lock"...
