My Tyre Dilemma
The time has come to replace my beloved BFG`s on the Cruisers. 79 Has done around 90k km on its set of KO2`s and the 76 has past the 80k km mark.
Looking around for prices on BFG`s I were offered Maxxis Razrs and Radar Regengade`s at very good prices.
Now the dilemma do I go with one of the other brands or do I stay with BF`s. Thing is the R5000.00 or so that I save now can bite me a few months down the line.
I have searched for reviews on the Razrs and Renegades not much that I find useful. My interest in their performance is longevity and sidewall strength in the condition I would use them. There is a huge difference in doing a few trails or traveling gravel roads with a full laden 4x4. Gravel roads that are known to hand out its share of sidewall cuts.
Anyone on the forum that have used these tyres extensively and can comment on longevity and sidewall durability. I am interested in high mileage
reports. Tyres that at least have covered 60k plus km.
This is important as I do not have a very good experience with Maxxis Bighorns. Lost 3 x 35`s
on the Yank Ranger and 2 x 33`s on the Little Patrol to date thanks to sidewall cuts. I know the Razrs are of better construction than the Bighorns.

Grips, morning , on Monday I met one of the Directors and the GM of Ironman, they were commenting they lost four BF's KO2 's on a recent Namibia trip. I fitted two Radar Renegade's MT, in Springbok, forced due to my excursion in Road to Hell. its really a good tyre. I know of three sets of people that have recently fitted the Radar's. Looking at Maxxis its always a good choice.

I have the Razr muds on my Jeep and love them, lots of grip in the wet and really good off road.
Side walls are awesome with not even a scratch on them yet and they have been on plenty rocks.
Not sure if they will last 80k km's as a tyre with that much grip usually does not last that long but I will buy them again.

I don't think we should judge Maxxis on the Bighorns, things have changed.
I'm very happy with my Cooper ST Maxx's and I'll get 90000km+, no sidewall cuts - but they are damn expensive and I doubt I'll refit Coopers due to the cost.
But Christo must have a 3 ply sidewall, he hates inflating beyond 1.8bar...
let's see what they say..

I can only say proof of the pudding is in the eating! If you want to make a good investment then the MAXXIS RAZR MT is your best value for the buck.
We put our MT's and AT's under tough strain on the tracks and im still looking to see the rock I'm trying to find that can injure my sidewalls.
Traction is unbeatable and road noise, well there's hardly none.
This from me with the mandate from MAXXIS to say if its any bad! Follow our Youtube channel to see what they do.
In our off time every weekend we punish them hard. I'm glad to roll on them.

I have seen Andreas's Razr's. Looks like they only do tar road. We all know they don't.
Recovered an 80 from Puros that had just gone through the Kaokoveld and the same. But there was something different on the car. It had Razr on the front and Bighorn at the back. The Bighorn showed some of that flint damage, but the Razr had none.
Brilliant tyre.

If you fit another brand & they prove inferior, we'll never hear the end of it.

At the moment I can only comment on 205/60R16 HT tyres that have only done 1200 miles since I bought my epic Touran in January.
So I guess that makes me unqualified for this discussion?

Just take the smooth tyres to the guy on the corner. He will cut new threads for you. Very cheap.

... the recent KO2 version of BFG ATs even better
with more tread down down the sidewall ... on my 235/85/16s ... nearly 1/2 way down the sidewall ...
but, must admit, they dont like deflating too much on extensive soft sand travel, river trips, beach etc
Out of the 50000 target mentioned prev how many Kms will be soft sand travel ??????
I feel the temp of tyres with my hand more than
sticking with pressure rules ... but looking to buy some TP sensors etc
with more tread down down the sidewall ... on my 235/85/16s ... nearly 1/2 way down the sidewall ...
