It's an expensive one. Can get some on Gumtree for R120 000

JUNE 2018

Leisure Wheels

Right, the June LW.
A Blue Amarok V6 in the desert in Oman on the cover.

A reader kaks on LW for their Off Road rating system, very funny!

Voetspore's Johan Badenhorst writes an article on the worst roads in AFRICA (none in Gauteng Image ).

They review the new VOLVO XC40's - I like them.

They (LW) take a whole lot of Double Cabs, an SUV & a Bus (Sprinter) through Lesotho & give their impressions on the country & the vehicles.

Then the most interesting article in the mag: N1 4x4 has dropped a tweaked 3.0 D-4D motor into a LC78.
Basically it's a conversion for guys who's old 4.2 is too old or too slow.
Our own Andre Strauss (member here) was involved with the high altitude run to Lesotho.
Very interesting.

A bunch of Amarok V6's go through Oman.

Then the ROUSH Ranger, but I'll cover that under the JULY CAR Magazine.

Mahindra has facelifted it's KUV - still ugly.

They test the new more powerful LC200.

There's an article on the various Double Cab canopies on the market.

They review Camelroc 4x4 near Fouriesburg - looks nice.

Mazda Australia has upgraded their Mazda BT50.

ARB has invented a modern version of the High-Lift Jack. Probably very pricey...

A guy built a Super FJ45 - very nice. He used an 80 as a donor vehicle.

An article on how overlanders tend to overload (that's why 4x4AG & TuffStuff held a Weighbridge day - scarey how easily you can exceed the GVM).

That's about it, folks.

Other than the N1 4x4 LC70 with a 3.0D-4D, there were only a few articles of interest...

JULY 2018

CAR
Magazine

ROUSH Ranger on the cover.

Merc GLA soon to be launched.

For those who don't know, GL is Merc speak for SUV.
GLS (was GL Class) based on the S Class (hence GLS)
GLE (was ML) based on the E Class
GLC based on the C class
GLB (still to be launched, will be based on B Class)
GLA is the baby, based on the new A Class.

The GLA will have a 1.5 Turbo diesel as found in the Duster, NP200, and other Renault/Nissan products.
There is also a 1.3 TP, 120kW & 250Nm & a 2.0 TP with 165kW.

Ford Australia has 'refreshed' the Ranger & Everest, you now ALSO (in addition to 2.2 & 3.2) get a 2.0 milk bottle motor with a claimed 157kW.
So about 142kW in the non Ford world.

Rolls has an SUV, called the Cullinan.

Tyre Companies:
Bridgestone 26,2 Billion in revenues.
Michelin 23.4 Billion
Good Year 14.6 Billion
Continental 12.8 Billion
Then something called Sumitomo at 6.3 Billion
Figures in USD...

There are 1 Billion vehicles on the road world wide right now. SA has 12.2 million of those. So we really are insignificant.

They Drive the MU-X. I like it, but it needs a DiffLock & a bigger Tank & a 5% price drop.

They Drive a Merc GLC63AMG, Twin Turbo V6 4.0 with 375kW - doubt it will do a trail though.

Lots of PlatKar stuff, including a VW Arteon. R700k for a 2.0TSI - are they nuts!!!

TESTS:
VW Polo 1.0TSi vs Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost - they rate the Ford very, very slightly better.

Two Volvo XC40's (one Diesel, one Petrol) get tested - they say buy the Diesel over the Jag E-Pace diesel and Audi Q3 diesel.
They also say buy the XC40 Petrol over the Mini Countryman & Jag E-pace petrol.

Test of the Ranger Roush 3.2 with 190kW - they say buy the Amarok over the Ranger, but the Ranger over the Merc Xeroc Class.
Take that Mercedes!

They test some ugly Porsche.

Then they Test the Navara 2.3 LE 4x2 AT - they say it sucks. 1st Triton Extreme, 2nd Hilux and LAST, the Navara.... pah!

Test a 7 seater Tiguan - who cares.

A advertising article on Mahindra - group is worth USD 19 Billion, it has 240 000 staff world wide...

That's about it.

BTW Kia has been in SA for 20 years already!

Oh! for Neil XJ Junkie.

The CEO of Bosch Dr Volkmar Denner says there is a future for diesel.
The reason is a breakthrough in NOx emissions reduction.

They can get the emissions down to 10% of the current legislated levels...

But he is German - so it may be by cheating - who knows.

I can't seem to figure out whether these car mags pay you for your reviews or if they will pay you to stop. Either way you make some money.

SEPTEMBER 2018

CAR
Magazine

I am struggling to do these reviews as the collapse of SOE's & the Post Office strike means I no longer get my magazines.
I called Ramsay Media to arrange alternative delivery, but after holding for 21 minutes I gave up...

Right, CAR September...

Polo GTi on the cover - in white

The current Editor, CAR's 8th, is stepping down

Alfa's proposed Guilia GTV, looks awesome. Will be AWD.

The Renegade gets a very mild nip & tuck. Overseas it will get a 90kW 3 cylinder 1.0 Turbo Petrol - JEEP POWER!!!!

The Golf has been in SA for 40 years. I was in high school when it was launched!

This is funny! Page 28 has a list of Cool Stuff you can buy:
VW has a Thermo Mug, Merc has Water Bottle, Ford a JUMBO Thermal Mug (for fat Ford drivers), Audi has a Carbon mug...
...and for the Duster Drivers? A Duster Hip Flask - that says everything!!!
Clearly XJJ fits their buyer profile perfectly... :D

Then a 4 page article on the Aussie launch of the new Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0litre Milk bottle.
It's 5.4m long & can only tow 2500kg.
But a nice write up.

The new Toureg, V6 3.0 190kW R1.1 million!

Then! The new Wrangler (Sahara & Rubicon) by Jeep.
Seems we will only get the V6 Pentasta initially.

Hopefully the 2.2 TDi with 147kW & 450Nm will be launched later...

Then a 4 way comparative test: Toyota Rush vs Renault Duster vs Honda BR-V vs Haval H2

The Rush comes last with 70 points.
The Duster gets 74 points.
The H2 get 75 &...
The BR-V wins with 77 points...

Then a test of a VW Arteon - it's basically a Passat Fastback, but they charge R700k for a 2.0TDI Passat! WTF?

They test a few other Platkarre...

Then a Test of a Fortuner 2,4 4x4 Auto.
It beats the Pajero Sport (because the Paj is R80k more & has poor support) &...
the Everest 2.2 because the Everest is not available in 4x4 Auto but it costs R30k more and is a bit pap...
Dunno why anyone would buy the 2.8GD Fortuner over the 2.4GD.
BTW, overall real world consumption was only 7.5l/100km (13.2km/l)

Motorbikes - Honda CRF450RX - R110k

For Thys Le Roux, there is a 4 page article on whether you should use 93 Octane or 95 Octane Petrol

Upcoming new models (offroad related) in 2018:
Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk
New Duster
Suzuki Jimny

They don't mention the Haval H9, but Haval says its coming in September.

BTW: I see the Nissan Hardbody NP300 2.5TDi 4x4 Double Cab is now listed - at a sales prohibiting R413k.
You have to be a special class of stupid to pay that when you can get a Hilux 2.4 4x4 SR Double Cab for 5% more...

That's all folks!!!

Nissan tries every trick in the book to prevent vehicle sales:
from poor marketing, to ugly designs, to poor parts support, to stupid pricing.
Yet still people walk in then its up to the sales people to be surly & unhelpful.

That NP300 4x4 2.5 TDi should be R368k maximum.

Thanks MalMan!

The Petrol Octane comparison is irrelevant to me - we only get 95 here in civilization (RooiTjiep has been designed to run happily on 89 octane BTW  )
I refuse to be POLITICALLY CORRECT to impress others - Deal with it
FLEX is UNDERRATED

Nissan's website still does not include the new NP300 DC 4x4 - I wouldn't buy a Nissan if they gave it to me.

Fortunately most Nissan's can be either be bought, for more, from Renault or Merc...

You do know what lying bastards they are right?

These are the same people that reckon the Amarok is a proper 4x4.
