An item that any camper needs?

Post by Mike Nel »

I don't know the answer.

What is the single most important item you would need for camping? Obvious things like tents, caravans, chairs, wife, kids etc doesn't count. And also not money.

I'll think a bit as well. But what is the thing you cannot go without?

Mine, in order, are:

1. The means to make a fire and braai (Wood, Firelighters, Matches, Grid, Meat etc.).
2. The means to boil water & make proper coffee (Heat Source, Kettle, Clean Water, Bodem, Filter Coffee, Cup etc.).
3. The means to keep my drinks cold (Cooler Box or Fridge).

I think its best to make a list of sets
needed for camping that you initially
gather and store, as such, together;
with basic necessities in each :
...
Shelter: Canvas tent+fly, basic awn/tarp,pegs etc
Bedding : S-Bags, stretcher, pillow etc
Fire&Cook : Tongs and as prev
Clothing: incl slops, hood-anorak, Beani, Hat etc
Food&Beer : as prev in fridge cooler etc
Chairs ... can use 1 w board as table
Sundry ... HeadLamp, T-Roll, etc
Tech: phone/s + chargers, GPS, VHF etc
etc ...
etc

Avoid buying camping gadgets
K.I.S. and basic

If Mannys there take ear plugs, look attentive...

GreenLaners in London
just need a Park Bench like Aqualung ...

Chas, I see you are one of those people who are content with a very basic camping setup.

Try to keep it quite basic though have
proper trailer and lot of collected kit
available to suit given trip if necessary.

... but yes ... basic.

Beer. That’s it.

With enough of it you don’t need shelter, food or ear plugs for Manny’s snoring.
