Which one should one go for? Heard some say to stay away from the new one due to issues and it being a bit soft? Thoughts?

Depends on your budget.
You'll struggle to find a new GD for less than R400k.
You'll get a very nice D-4D shape for under R400k.
Personally I'd go D-4D shape (2014 or 2015 model).
Those were permanent 4WD.
The New GD's are RWD unless you put it in 4x4.

As far as I'm concerned AWD refers to a softroader that normally sends most drive to the front axle and only sends drive to the rear when it senses slippage via a Haldex type coupling.
AWD's in my opinion, have no Low Range Transfer case.
Fearless is permanent 4x4, it is not AWD...
