Land Cruiser.
Explain?
LC 75 with ADE352
The ADE 238 4 banger Ferguson engine was used. The 352 six is huge, heavy and was not put into Cruisers.

I am actually more interested in adaptations made to vehicles to suit SA conditions than SA specific models...

SA 45 series Cruisers had, as of late 73 (ish), Bloemfontein (Vetsak I think) built loadbins instead of the single panel round arch units found elsewhere. The unsealed seams on the side really like to rust, see below.

In the 50's and 60's, Ford and GM at least had the stepside loadbin "inner square part" built locally (PE I believe) which was all steel (and rusts like nobody's business at the unsealed seams). The US had side panels with seams and wooden bed floors.

VW SA built ugly as can be CJ 6 Jeeps using only straight rulers (think Chev Nomad ugly) out of CJ5's for the army.

The SFA Hilux ran all the way to 1997 (I think) while the rest of the world went IFS front and round bodywork in the late 80's, early 90's already.

All 70's GM and Ford pickups only got 6 bangers from the dealership as far as I know while the US clients got an array of V8's to choose from over the 6 bangers.

The first SFA Hiluxes were imports with the rear lights on both sides of the tail gate like most bakkies these days. Farmers and contractors moaned about damaging them loading stuff onto the bak. Toyota listen and we had a unique bak in SA with lights tuck away under the tail gate

Also on the SFA Hilux. Toyota SA collaborated with mining houses, farmers and contractors.
There was a problem on the rear drums with mud entering and eating the inners away.
Toyota SA designed a rear drum brake and backplate unique to SA Hiluxes.

Well , in Land Rovers , I guess the Kalahari Defender was localized for us, as was the R6 but that was probably to cater to a specifically large order !
I think much of this ‘localisation’ derives from whether there were/are local SA assembly plants and their capabilities to produce appropriate ‘specification variations’ of car kits that are basically largely complete component imports.

The new 2020 D-Max bakkie is coming to SA nearly a year late because;
* They need to tool up.
* They need to make a certain % (?35%) locally to earn the credits.
* They need to 'localise' it (the aforementioned upgrades to dust & strength & cooling etc.)

However, the new Mazda BT-50 which is 100% built by Isuzu, will be a fully built import, so it won't be 'localised'.
It will be interesting to see the differences between the two bakkies (other than the obvious cosmetic changes)...

First two models of the Nissan Sani was not a Nissan creation, but that of the Sani Company. Nissan took over Sani to create the MK3 (flared fender American Pathfinder/Terrano look alike),
Image
to basically kill the Sani in preperation for the real Terrano, and eventually the Pathfinder so as to eliminate competition for these new models.

One advantage of Nissan controlling Sani and the MK3 model, is that the metal to Fiberglass stitch was done way better than the previous models.

This is such a boring thread ,. Land Rover has been doing this for years , they send over there cars , and we then have to fix them
