What would you suggest?

So you live in another country and plan on visiting SA every 24 months, maybe even a little bit more frequently. When visiting SA you plan on doing a 7-10 day overlanding trip as part of your holiday.

You have two choices:

1) you rent a vehicle when you arrive. A vehicle specifically for overlanding. You see many of them on the road.
2) buy a vehicle in the R300K price bracket, spend another R100K getting it overlanding ready, and store it. You then have a your very own vehicle ready when you arrive. (Storage would be free).

What would you do?

Rent as required. R400k as a depreciating asset laying around in a garage somewhere is not a good idea. Vehicles like to be driven and will pick up all sorts of problems sitting for 2 years at a time. Tyres for one. Batteries. Water Tanks. Suspension rubbers. Service once a year. You will have to spend time on each trip making sure that all is in order before heading out on a trip and putting it all to bed when you return.

Rent what you want. Arrive. Do your shopping and go.

You will always get something back after you decide to sell.

However, if you really play your cards right i could be persuaded to "look after" your Land Cruiser for you. At a push the FJ.

But get a decent overlander.
Like an old Cruiser 4.2 Troopy/D Cab/76.

You need to store it up country.
The sea air & the crap coastal weather are not ideal for long term storage.
You need it closer to the places you'll be going.
Besides, people up here are more trustworthy.

I would definitely store it with someone you know & trust who will keep it in running order.

Andreas has failed to keep his Series Landy in good running order.
He also parks his own vehicles in the open.
However he has kindly offered, which is nice.

If you leave the GX or other Cruiser here, my even kinder offer still stands...
But I'm not looking after a lesser brand for you.

Your Family in Tshwane will let dogs sleep in it - just sayin'...

Besides. The boy is going to Australia. He is not looking to invest in Rands.

It depends whether you’ll mainly be an occasional prodigal camper or prodigal off-road ‘trailist’, or both. I’d probably keep all my hand-picked camping stuff in/on a basic camping trailer as a storage unit, such as RTT, braai stuff, sleeping bags, basic tools, chairs, tables etc. and I’d flog the car.

I do agree with those who imply R300k of idle capital is unwise as the interest reaped off that amount will more than cover the rental cost of a (proper) off-roader (plus insurance) on your occasional return.

PS - Selling your other camping stuff & kit will realize little cash.
