SUV or Bakkie?

Why would you choose a SUV over a Bakkie?

Ranger vs Everest?
Hilux vs Fortuner?
Etc
Etc
Etc
Why?

For me, and no-one else... we all have different needs:

I chose an SUV because:

• 7 seater

• Shorter than a D/C

• Coil springs all round

• Wife can access boot, with a bakkie your shopping ends up at the back of the bin and end up climbing in like a monkey

• Bigger back doors

• Better rear leg room

• Shorter rear overhang

• Can access boot from inside the car

I’m not a farmer or a garden service guy, so I chose an SUV.

I moved from Bakkie to SUV as I got fed up with taking too much crap with on holiday.
And having to climb into the bak to get stuff that had shifted to the front because I braked to hard for too many taxis and other idiots.
And my daughter and her boyfriend complaining about no legroom at the back.
And bouncing around on uneven roadways.
We won't mention the 5l of white paint that fell over and redecorated half of the bak.

I had a 3.0 Kz-TE, I bought it brand new, for R180k.

Despite what the Metromen say, a Double Cab is very veritile & I enjoyed mine.

Years later when I was looking for a 4x4, I chose the Fortuner over a Double Cab because I have a fleet of bakkies.

Even when I had the Kz-TE I used my bakkies as they could carry twice as much.

SUV is you can put stuff like pillows or a duvet etc in as it'll stay clean, also it's safer from theft.

But a D/Cab you can chuck your wet dive suit or the dirty dogs in.

It's really up to usage...

I prefer the D/C any day of the week over an SUV - but that's due to my usage of the loadbin. Can't imagine loading a bloodied oryx or kudu in the back of an SUV or filling up an SUV's boot with mopane fire wood.

Make no mistake, an SUV has its place. I'll be sure to get my wife one next year, you know - for the mall and groceries and stuff.

I see the new Dmax will have coils at the back. So it's basically a MUX with a longer tail

Bakkie is more versatile.

Every now and again I need to move something big and or heavy with short notice no time to go get trailer.

90% of the time a Suv would have worked.

But in the same breath, 90% of the time i don't need 4x4.

I've never really seen the point of a twin cab, or even a single cab raised bakkie.

It's like a reverse mullet - business at the back and party up front. Not very good at anything.

If you want a utility vehicle, get a utility vehicle. Forward control bus, van or flat bed - and yes, you get 4WD ones.

If you want a big car, get an SUV, and if you need to take the occasional load of rubbish to the dump, get a small trailer.
