4x4 and Over landing Etiquette

I think we could add one more to that list and that is:

Respect the other people in your group or convoy.

I had the unfortunate displeasure of doing a trail with someone who had absolutely NO respect for the people in the group. Now. I don't care how capable you are, how good your vehicle is or how much you think about yourself. If you are part of a group, a group you willfully joined after an invite, you surely stick it out with them regardless of how boring you might find the excursion. After the outing you free to go and not join these folk again.

Halfway through this trial, this individual just vanished. Unfortunately not all had radio contact including him and his gang ( RADIO"S, RADIO's, RADIO's) and we only realized he was gone a good while later (he drove at the back).

Why am I going off like this? What if something happened to him and his passengers? We would have no way of knowing.

I have now decided that whenever I see his name on a list to go 4x4'ing, I will respectfully decline to go with. If you do not have any respect for other people, then I don't have any respect for you.

If we could add this point to the 10 commandments it would be great. Maybe we can think of other important points as well

I think people get left behind for a few reasons. There are too many people in the group and the front guys gets too far ahead. And when people do not keep the guy behind them in in sight. Or the guy just wander off or turn around and leave.

This is of concern and needs to be solved.

There should be a leader in front and a sweeper behind. With radios if possible but cell phones will do?

No it’s not acceptable, but why lose any sleep over it? If the guy want to go he is in his rite to leave, maybe he had a emergency and had to go home or something, yes he could of have informed someone on the group (maybe he did)
You just go on to say it’s disrespectful and unacceptable without knowing(or at least telling us) what his reasons where (if he had any)
Are you assuming he didn’t have a emergency? Or do you know he didn’t have one and just left cos the group was boring?

Mike The Ten Commandments & The Code of Conduct are for members of the 4x4Action Group.

Members of the club know not to behave like that, so it's pointless adding it to our Ten Commandments.
It's like adding "Join a decent Club' to the list.

We've all experienced some chop, often in a Jeep, that thinks heis a Lone Ranger Maverick who's a better driver than the others.
But really, it's almost always the vehicle that is good & the driver is just a prick.

We had a guy finish his tin Smirnoff mix & then hang it by the tag in the tree, at 09:20 in the morning - we got rid of him chop chop.

I must add though, since we developed the Ten Commandments & have them presented at the start before heading out - we've never had a problem.
I keep a pack in a folder in the pocket behind the seat.

At one event (3 Provinces) I told the guy in charge to please present them. He wasn't interested.
So I pushed a copy in his hand & said, "At least look at them.".

When he did his presentation he didn't use the Ten Commandments, but he did say the following:

"Guys, don't drink until the lunch break, when you can have a small Castle Light or two, but keep it under control"
- They all got hammered, one guy handed his glass of Brannas to the girl in the car to fill with 'en Coke' & then banged the glass on the door sill spilling the contents on his poppie.
The guy in charge was so pissed that he couldn't operate his winch in a recovery.

The next thing he said was:
"Tyres, deflate to 1.8 bar"
I went to 1.2 bar, but then I didn't bypass all the difficult stuff like they did.

His final announcement was Gold:
"Don't under estimate your difflock, it can help yoiu even on steep down hills, so use it as often as possible and not only when you loose traction."
He then got stuck on a hill I did with no effort - & we both have exactly the same model Fortuner.

The bottom line is: Don't 4x4 with arseholes...

@Gualter. No. There was no emergency. In fact. He sat at the same place for a beer where we originally said we were going after the trail.

Best is to “know” whom you travel with. If it is just a day trail, then not so bad but if it is an overlanding trip try to get to know the test of the group prior to departure.
