It’s more like R10 to R12k. But in your case, you forgot to factor in the cost of the engine rebuild.ThysleRoux wrote:
My average monthly expense over the past 3 years - parts for "breakdowns", services, tyres, fuel, insurance, etc. on my 18-year-old V8 Jeep doing 2.5-3 k km mostly peak hour town driving per month, amounts to about R7000. The installments on a R350 k vehicle with a 10% deposit, at 12% interest rate amounts to about R7100 p.m. over 60 months. Then you have not insured it, bought fuel or tyres, or factored in depreciation, etc.
Do the math

The engine rebuild took place 6 years ago. Even though I did not pay for it myself the quotes I got at the time was less than a set of injectors for the average diesel engine at the time. It was also not supposed to happen - as said previously it was caused by my own stupidity, not due to the type or age of the vehicle at the time. If you Duster motor seizes due to your mistake, good luck with the warranty claim. Calculated over the full 9 years of ownership, the total running costs are even less than mentioned earlier - including the engine rebuild.

But therein lies my point. Potential failures have to be factored in.
If an engine goes somebody has to pay. In my case, it’s the dealer. Then I don’t have to start a thread.
With your monthly mileage yours must be in 750kkm by now.

It has not always been a daily driver and my mileage was much lower before. I originally quoted the distances currently driven. You also conveniently ignore my previous comment that damages caused to you Duster due to your mistakes will not be covered by the warranty.
With your budget of R10 to R12 k per month, I can run my Jeep and provide for an engine failure every 5 years, with money left over for mods.

No, it was not - but in my defense, I was on the brink of unemployment due to retrenchment and while it was stressful, was not too phased. My intention was to let it stand until the funds became available and fix it. I did not ask my buddies to repair it, although I'm still grateful for the gesture. If I had a R7k pm repayment at the time, I would have been truly stuffed .........................XJ Junkie wrote: ↑Sat May 12, 2018 2:13 pmFaults & failures = warrantyThysleRoux wrote:It has not always been a daily driver and my mileage was much lower before. Neil, you can reason any way you want - unless it is a vehicle mainly required for business use by individual business owners like Alex, with the accompanying tax and depreciation benefits for the business, or if you get compensated by your employer, buying a new vehicle does not make sense to us normal salaried okes. A vehicle is not an investment, it's a depreciating asset.
The depreciation on a R340k Duster over a 5 year period will be more than the maintenance and repairs on a TDV Disco.

Bottom line: it shat the bed & you had to get other people to fix it.ThysleRoux wrote: No, it was not - but in my defense, I was on the brink of unemployment due to retrenchment and while it was stressful, was not too phased. Your obviously not very familiar with 4WD Duster resale values.ThysleRoux wrote:

I did not HAVE to get other people to fix it - friends graciously took it upon themselves to do so. As mentioned I would have been totally f*cked if I was responsible for the balance of payments on a R300k+ vehicle at the time.by XJ Junkie » Sun May 13, 2018 11:23 am

I don't know what the new price of a 4wd Duster was back in 2013 (around R300k ?), but a quick check on AutoTrader shows an average resale of 2013 models with around 100k km on the clock at R174k. Trade would probably be in the vicinity of R140k if you are luckyYour obviously not very familiar with 4WD Duster resale values.

The same percentage on R340k would amount to R180k - enough to replace a TDV6 crank

You won’t find a 4WD Duster for much less than 200k, unless it’s got serious mileage in it.
Launch price of that vehicle in 2013/14 was R240k. That’s only a R40k drop for a 4/5 yo vehicle. Even trade in’s are fetching favorable offers because of demand. Dealers can’t get enough stock.
If your going to bad mouth a vehicle then at least try to get your facts straight.

Are you talking about his / your operating costs or the bond costs?XJ Junkie wrote:It’s more like R10 to R12k. But in your case, you forgot to factor in the cost of the engine rebuild.ThysleRoux wrote:

350k Over 4 years at prime, which everyone should get unless you are naughty with your spending, should be R8 900 more or less and about 70 bucks for admin fees.

My current one probably costs me R10 to R12k. But that’s installment, fuel, tyres, services, insurance all in.
Nobody pays prime do they?

I have seen in a video (which was taken back in 2010) that the duster had some stability issues. Have they managed sort out the ESP since then? I can't seem to find a recent similar video about the new range of dusters?
