If you are doing a lot of mileage second hand cars just don't make any sense.

you get a brand new car with a warranty and a motor plan and it costs you 8k a month or whatever. if something goes wrong, you get given a loaner and it gets fixed and you never have to worry about a big nasty bill or being stuck without transport for a couple of months.

you drive it for a few years and sell it when the warranty is up , no problems.

you buy a used more upmarket , say 4 year old vehcile for the same money - 8k a month or so - and you still have to pay for services and repairs and have to carry any major issues. it's actually really costing you 12k a month and you might as well be driving a new more upmarket vehcile.

the Duster has some pretty reasonable offroad ability - it's not a Rubicon, but it will get you up some rough road to some pretty places and , to boot, it's a nice every day drive as well.

with cars, unlike Women, virgins are good. As Billy Connely pointed out, when it comes to women, you can keep your virgins, what you really want is a couple of fire breathing whores....

All cars are going to have issues in their old age - just like people, they are going to shit the bed from time to time, and more often too as time passes.

some people get it worse and have to deal with a crankshaft passing through and leaving their sphincter a little worse for the wear.

unlike hoomans, new cars generally don't need a nappy though!

My Jeep shat in the bed due to my own stupidity. The cleaned diaper has lasted close on 160k km and is as unsoiled as the day Chico returned it to Alex. RooiTjiep has it's niggles (many issues related to old age, actually), but my total monthly running costs (V8 fuel consumption as a daily drive included) is still way lower than the instalments on a R350k Duster would be..................................... and I don't need to wear the McDonalds carrier bag when driving it

Installment wise, mines nearly double the norm but I’ll be paid off before the warranty is up.

Try doing 4000km per month for 4 or 5 years in any of the vehicles you’ve mentioned & it’ll probably kill most people financially, just on fuel alone. That’s 48kkm per year, which is nearly 200kkm in 4 years. Good luck trying that in an older vehicle that already has mileage on it.

But there are bigger risks too. These days if an engine or gearbox goes you’ve got a big outlay coming your way. I’ve got none of that stress because the warranty is 5yr/150kkm. So if the motor goes I won’t even have to start a thread.

Yip. Mines nearly on 105kkm. It’s been the cheapest car we’ve owned, excluding 1 Nissan & the 2 Fiats.

My average monthly expense over the past 3 years - parts for "breakdowns", services, tyres, fuel, insurance, etc. on my 18-year-old V8 Jeep doing 2.5-3 k km mostly peak hour town driving per month, amounts to about R7000. The installments on a R350 k vehicle with a 10% deposit, at 12% interest rate amounts to about R7100 p.m. over 60 months. Then you have not insured it, bought fuel or tyres, or factored in depreciation, etc.

Do the math

I can’t buy a virgin for that price, not even a Chinese one[emoji23]

Even if I chuck the costs of my bike (daily drive) into that equation it still wouldn’t make up for the installment of a 340K vehicle
