Place to watch the best forecasts for snow will be...... https://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/AfriSki/6day/mid

We leave JHB after work on Friday and travel through to Caledonspoort.
There is a place right at the border post called Camelroc https://www.camelroc.co.za/
Border opens early and from there you are at Afriski in a few hours.
Thanks Wooky, great advice Image

Looking at the historical data/graphs it seems the 1st week of July or 2nd week of August have highest probability of good snow/conditions ...

I'm considering heading to Lesotho this weekend, looks like we might get lucky, it's currently snowing at afriski.

If I happen to get the cruiser into some serious icy conditions, common sense tells me to put snow chains on the front axle? I'd like to have steering and traction. And drop pressures to 1.2 bar all round.
Any thoughts?

Dropping tyre pressure for icy or snowy conditions is an old wives tale. Unless you foresee mud and snow, then its a totally different scenario. But if you stick to tar, chains would suffice.

About 3 years back we decided to go to Afriski in the Fortuner, it was snowing and the roads icy, I had the vehicle in 4HLc, we came around a corner to people waving us down, it took me ages to actually come to a stop having to avoid the person who had not anticipated the distance I needed to bring my car to a stop, I had to drive off the tar onto the side gravel section of the road, it was actually very scary, so please please be very careful. The gravel has much more traction than the tar.

It turned out there was a major accident up ahead, a Ford Kuga had lost control and taken out itself and the barrier leaving a trail of car parts all over the road, thankfully everyone was ok, but the Kuga was a wright off. We played in the snow right there for about 2 hours, then officials told us it only gets worse, the road is closed up ahead and we were to head back, very scary stuff that snow/ice.

Go have a look on SnowReports website, they have cameras installed. if you look at AfriSki at the moment you will see it is clear skies and very little snow fell it would not be worth it in my opinion.

Kurt, a really incredible place to stay is not far from Afriski, far less populous and incredible. Its existence is not widely known, but its really good. You have to leave the afriski main road and dive some offroad track to get there. https://www.google.com/travel/hotels/ch ... cfs=EgBSAA

Great thread Kurt,

We did a similar trip one weekend long ago when the kids were still small. But we had so much snow we could play in it close to Sterkfontein dam near the van Reenen’s pass area for the whole day.

We left very very early on the Saturday and hit the snow at daybreak, by lunchtime the kids were wet, freezing and exhausted. We changed them into dry clothes, loaded them in and travelled back.

Staying over nearby would be absolutely bliss.
Maybe it is time to do it again...
