The evolution of the rear end...
Basically, baring a few exceptions (Like the Defender P/U) all bakkies have had a rear set up follows:
Leaf Springs
Rear Drum brakes.
BTW: If the Cab & the Bak are one unit (like with a Chev Utility, Nissan NP200 or the Chevy SS pick up, its NOT a bakkie - a bakkie has a separate load bin.
Now as bakkies move away from being load vehicles for work & towards being lifestyle vehicles for people too stupid to but an SUV, manufacturers are looking at giving bakkies more car-like rear setups.
In the mainstream market, in South Africa, the first to do it was Nissan, the new Navara has Coils, not leafs.
Biut it was a stuff up & gives no advantages & all the disadvantages.
However, more manufacturers will go this route in future.
In post two I'll list all those to break with the time honoured Leaf & Drum set up.
We'll keep it updated as more manufacturers go this route over time.

So only the GD-6 Fortuner got rear discs?
I really though Toyota would have put discs on the Hilux too

Malman, the Yanks were way ahead of time with the evolution of bakkie suspensions. The Chevy C10's had a coil sprung rear and torsion bar front suspension way back in the 60's.........

Revolutionary for its time but one of the pitfalls of the C10. They were quickly know as papgatte for their lack in ability to carry loads.ThysleRoux wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 12:37 pmMalman, the Yanks were way ahead of time with the evolution of bakkie suspensions. LOL - in the Kalahari they were known as the most comfortable bakkies around, but the front suspension was believed to be suspect, as they tended to sag. Nobody realized how easy it is to adjust torsion bars.

YES! you are right, 70 years ago (1959) Chevrolet brought out a C10 with no rear leafs.
The 2nd Generation also had no leafs & front Torsion bars were added.
Then, in 1973, 14 years after the launch of the original, they realised their error & added rear leafs.

According to you , technically only the 130 is a bakkie as the other defender derivatives are unibodies...Mad Manny wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 11:10 amALL Bakkies are Rear Leaf & Drum (as at May 2019) except:

You omitted the Ssangyong Actyon. That’s had coils since circa 2007. Waaaaay ahead of the curve.Mad Manny wrote:ALL Bakkies are Rear Leaf & Drum (as at May 2019) except:

And just to add , there is absolutely nothing wrong with the weight carrying capabilities of a defender . Whether it be a station wagon or pick up .Apocalypse wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 4:23 pm

The Ssangyong is also disqualified by the fixed load box

The Volla which I am converting to a plaas bakkie had standard shocks since '62.
Seems I will have a bakkie with proper flex when I am done
