XJ that looks like fun. Some people get stuck just to use their winch. Will advise my mate to get a wich 1.5 the weight of the car and to get some blocks incase.

It’s 1.5 times the GVM of vehicle you’re pulling. Not 1.5 times the vehicle weight.

Neil's answer was always the wisest.

the best winch is the one on the front of your mate's 4x4.

If you are stressing over fuel consumption and running costs, you don't need a winch.

The other time a winch was used seriously, I was only co-driver. So it wasn’t my fault Image

My 130 has a 9000lb winch. Have only needed it to recover myself once, when I sank the truck in a bog, and the winch was pretty much at its limit. The truck weighs near enough to 3.5 fully loaded but was probably at around 2.5 to 3 tons at the time.

Only other time I've used it in anger was to winch a Land Rover Forward Control onto a trailer.

The winch is more of an insurance policy than anything else...with lockers front and rear, you can drive yourself into a lot of trouble. If I had kept the truck the plan was to fabricate a bracket that would allow me to mount the winch front or rear.

An important thing which is often forgotten with winching is that the more cable is on the winch, the less powerful they are.

There’s a big drop in pulling power, so the winch can struggle if it isn’t let out far enough.
