A Diff'Rant Tale...

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

2004:
My father needed a new bakkie for the fleet, it needed to carry a ton, be diesel & be able to take a full length roof rack.
Back then there were only two 'half tonner' Diesels (Corsa 1.7D & Bantam 1.8D) but he needed a 1 tonner.

There was the Hyundai 2.6D & the Kia 2700D due, but they are L200 shape & therefore can't load items over 2,7Lm.

So that left conventional 1 tonner bakkies, the options were:
Mitsubishi Colt 2800D Standard - R144k rated at 71kW & 198Nm - more on this later
Mitsubishi Colt 2800D Highline - R146k (it added A/C & a Radio plusafew other goodies)

There was aFord - but he wasn't going to buy a Ford.

Isuzu KB250D - R150k rated at 52kW & 152Nm
Toyota Hilux 2400D - R150k rated at 61kW & 162Nm.

Mitsubishi had a 60/40 split seat, they threw in the Hi-line goodies (A/C & a Radio) & they gave him a good deal.

So he bought the Colt...

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

2005:
In early 2005 (or late 2004 there is no date stamp), he had the 7500km inspection service done at Sandown Mitsubishi but it was done late, at 10 120km.
The 15 000km service was not done, the 22 500km service was done in July 2005 @ 24 220km. This was done by my Mechanic Brother.
30 000km service - not done
37 500km oil service - not done

2006:
45 000km service - done on time in February. This was done by my Mechanic Brother.
52 500km oil service - not done
60 000km service - not done
67 500km oil service - not done

2007:
75 000km service - done on time in April.

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

Treatment:
No one (not even Quack) treats a vehicle as badly as my father did. He would always be in the wrong gear.
He'd start a vehicle early on a cold winters morning (never pre-heating a diesel) & then redline it a few times to warm it up.
He always drove with his foot resting on the clutch.
He often drove the Colt, but it was also driven by drivers who treated it as badly, as they followed his example.

2008:
In 2008 things got interesting, at around 75 000km the clutch started going, but they continued driving it for a while.
Finally it was so bad they took it to Mitsubishi Sandown Motors.
Mitsubishi pointed out that they had not seen the vehicle in 65 000km & there was only one (of the 9 services) shown as done.
So they carried on driving it. Finally it packed up.
The tyres were worn, the clutch completely stuffed, the battery was FUBAR. The vehicle was in a sorry state, with less than 80 000km & only 4 years old.

The old man had been suffering from cancer for years, in the second half of 2008 it came back with a vengeance & in August the old man shuffled off his mortal coil...

In September I asked what was the status of the Colt, they said they needed to spend R14 000 on it so they could sell it for R30 000 or R40 000.
They had R10 000, but were reluctant to start in case they couldn't finish.
I told them to keep the R10k & I gave them (the family) R30k & started resorting it.

We fitted a new Clutch, Pressure Plate, Thrust Bearing & Flywheel. I had the 82 500km service done (on time), fitted a new battery & tyres, cleaned it up & put it into service.

2009:
In 2009 I took it to Steve's Auto Clinic (like all SAC work - it made no difference).
But through 2009 all services were done, more or less on time.

2010:
In 2010 I scrapped the 'Every 7500km' service shedule & started doing services every 10 000km.

2011
In 2011 I had 140 000km done... then the Diff issues started...

At 142 800km the diff went I took it to Rex Diff & Gearbox (RDG) in Boksburg - their Customer Service was terrible.
They never, ever, called to give feedback. They never returned calls. In fact the lady even tried to say she didn't have my number!?!.
Yet you give your details on Checking In AND MY NUMBER IS BRANDED ON THE SIDES & BACK OF THE VEHICLE!!!
RDG charged R5 560.00 & fitted, allegedly, a new Diff & Side shafts bearings- but I doubt so much was done.

Their Invoice shows;
Supply Reconditioned Colt Differential & replace Side Shaft Bearings.

A few weeks later there was a noise from the diff, I booked it in &, given their crap service, called & confirmed the day before.
I then sent the driver to RDG & called to tell them he was on his way.
I called the driver 2 hours later & asked if he was done - he said he had be waiting for 2 hours.
I called the useless bitch, chewed her fat ass off & told her I'll start billing for down time!!!
They then gave him address miles away, he drove there & someone did some work on the vehicle - I have no idea what was done!?!

I vowed never to use RDG again!

In 2012 & 2013 all went well...

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

2014:
2014 was to be an troublesome year.
Firstly the propshaft went wonky & I sent it to PropBore Engineering for new Universal Joints, a new center bearing & balancing.
This was in July, the vehicle was on 202 000km (60 000km after RDG did the Diff.

Then in December the timing chain went,
This is a very interesting story, please scroll down to the post titled Steve's Auto Clinic. You'll be horrified!

2015:
2015 was to make 2011 & 2014 seem mild by comparison...
The timing chain issues continued, but, eventually I got that ALL sorted - read the SAC post below.

No sooner was the SAC chain of timing chain (pun intended) stuff ups sorted out, when, in August 2015, at 218 000km (76 000km & 4 years after RDG did the diff), it packed up again! :o

Not wanting to subject myself to RDG's crap work, crap service & distance, I decided to go to Gearmax

Gearmax was great, hive of activity, great service (I actually never saw a white person working there).

Gearmax charged R5 500,00 & did:
Fitted a 4.11:1 Hilux 2.4/2.8 Gearset & changed wheel bearings, Pinion gear & all parts, side gear, castle gear & all bearings.
2016, 2017 & 2018 were, thankfully, uneventful.

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

2019:
In May 2019 (notice how many issues are in May or August), at 278 000km (60 000km after Gearmax had redone the entire diff, it collapsed.
The drive had complained about a noise from the rear left wheel when turning left.
But because we were busy & the new KB250 had not come on line yet, I forced the complaining driver to press on.
The one evening Hein called, they had just left Chas (Bushwacker's) house & he said the noise was bad - they didn't think they'd make it home.
"Just drive!" I ordered...
I then dug out the Gearmax 20125 Invoice & prepared for war.
The next morning, I told them to completely strip the vehicle of all belongings so I could take it back to Gearmax.
They unloaded, drove it 500m to where we dump our rubble... and there is stopped, dead, unable to move.

I then dispatched the teams to work & asked my brother to get it to the workshop so he could take the diff out.
He managed to get it to the lift, but no further.
That night all staff pushed it onto the lift, my brother stripped the Diff out & the following morning I took it to Gearmax...

Gearmax....
When I went to Gearmax in 2015 (I also had my Isuzu KB280DT diff, which went at about 360 000km, done there.) it was a vibey, busy, happening place - a veritable hive of activity, busy, friendly staff bustling around.
Well, that, sadly, is no longer the case - I actually drove into Gearmax, thought I'd driven into the wrong gate & drove out again.
Finally I realised I was at the right place & went back.
It was dead...
I parked in their new much, much smaller premises (400m down from where they used to be).
The parking was deserted, I walked up to a small, battered door & knocked, the door creaked open.
Here in a dark room was a desk & a smiling face of Arrie.
I walked up, told him my story, said that, although I feel Gearmax should fix it under warranty, I accept it is out of warranty in time & distance, but expected him to look after me.
They unloaded the diff & he promised a quote the next day.
I then asked him "BTW, What the hell has happened to Gearmax, it's a sad shadow of it's former self?"
Arrie explained how, a few years ago, the two big shots had plundered & raped their own company, even selling the machines required to do stuff like torque converters.
They'd then skipped. He said they were trying to rebuild, but it wasn't easy.

The next day (Friday) Arrie never called,so I called him, he said they have phone line issues.
He quoted R9 800.00. I told him to get stuffed.
I said I am not paying Gearmax R10k to fix a Gearbox that they had fitted only 60 000km ago.
Arrie said he'd sharpen his pencil.

Colt off the road for 3 days...

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

2019:
KurtG, PartHunt & Gabby:

After getting the price from Arrie of Gearmax on Friday afternoon, I called KurtG, I told him the story & asked for help, he has a Mitsubishi & believes they are great.
Kurt made a few calls, first to Arnold of MitsuTech who referred him to JC Tree of Parthunter.
Parthunter is a Mitsubishi only Scrapyard situated out near Kameeldrift, Pretoria East.
JC Tree said he had plenty diffs, from R6 000.00.

The next day (Saturday) I went to CMH Volvo Mitsubishi in Strubensvalley.
I asked for the price of a new diff.
You cannot get a Colt diff - no longer supplied.

On Monday Arrie WhatApped me to say they have no phones, but he could do the Diff for R8 500.00.
But given that Gearmax's work is only good for 60 000km & no diff repair lasts, I wasn't keen on this option.

My policy is to never drive far for one reason, so I set up a 'Pretoria Day' I arranged to attend to a comeback at Nico's house (Swartkat), go to Parthunter & see a tiling job in Hatfield - I also tried to set up two other appointments - to no avail.
This was on Thursday - Colt standing for 8 days.

After dropping the team at Swartkat's house in Val De Grace I headed, (with my brother Gabby) to Parthunt.

It's basically an open yard with Mitsubishi parts lying out in the open, engines with heads removed standing in the sun & rain etc.
I had taken R5 000.00 cash, as that's all I was going to pay.
I approached Morgan (who I'd called the day before), but was intercepted by Martin, I asked him if he was JC (although his name was on his shirt).
He said he is the owner & JC Tree no longer works there.
I got the impression that some 'Boere twis' had taken place - as usual.

Anyhoo, Martin vanished & Morgan showed me two diffs. Both sorry looking.
The one showed signs of abuse, wear, massive mileage & had clearly been fitted to another vehicle.

The other was still attached to the vehicle, was missing a side-shaft, but was otherwise a far better option.
The problem was that the vehicle it was attached to was a Colt 2000i.
I went to Morgan & asked him if he had any others.
He said no.

We then haggled over price & he came down to R5500, but I told him I had R5000 CASH & he took it in a flash.

Two grease monkeys then tried to fit the sideshaft from Diff one to the 2000i diff, but they were clearly clueless.
So after moving my bakkie to let Mitsutech out, my brother & I decided to tie the diff up & take it as these guys were hitting the sideshaft in with a hammer & claiming a press is needed (it isn't), Parthunter are a clueless bunch.

I took the diff & my brother back to the Yard & he started stripping the new diff immediately.

The next day (Friday) Colt standing for 10 days, I drove to Gearmax to collect my Diff.
The Diff was stripped & in pieces.
They tried to only give me half my stuff back & were clearly unhappy I was taking it.
I had to insist on the side shaft & check they had returned it all (They hadn't, thieving bastards).

I took the Diff to the workshop, my Brother noticed that a key part had not been returned - not impressed with Gearmax...

We needed to fit MOST of my original parts to the PartHunt Diff, as my original parts (except the diff internals) were in far better condition.

We then analyzed the damaged parts... see pics in next post...

The pictures clearly show (& Paul#25, Apoc, Ginger & Grips confirm this) that the diff was very poorly assembled - this means that Gearmax is responsible for the failure, yet they wanted to rip me R8500 to fix their stuff up...

Oh. And I’ve just realized .

Those rpm figures I gave you earlier would be for 4th, 1:1 ratio and not 5th which is usually an overdrive!

A tale about a 2004 Mitsubishi Colt 2800D workhorse bakkie:

2019:
4:11 vs 4:55

On Saturday (today) my Brother calls. The Diff Morgan of PartHunt has sold is a 4.55:1 (as was the original OEM Diff), whilst the Hilux Diff my Colt had was a 4.11:1.
So we were going back to the original Ratio.

Anyway, that's where we are now - hopefully the Colt will be back on Wednesday (2 weeks off the road).

I'll keep you posted.

I figured as much as you didn't have the 5th gear ratio.
But your advice was invaluable & helped me make the decision...

All that blue ink and not one single mention of Liberty Life or a Story about a Roman Emperor. What else are you not telling us?
