Re- Gear the Lever on a Defender ...

Re- Gear the Lever on a Defender ...

Whilst on my recent trip in Richtersveld
the gear lever went limp at Kockerboomkloof
... clearly more than Viagra was called for ...

Three photo s below show how I still
got about 100km to Sendelingsdrif
where lever was welded:

1 Welded stem of lever ...
note the back-facing horizontal foot
thats splined to gear shaft of box
(The stem broke at the bend
just below the safety bulge on the lever)

2. The broken stem of the lever with foot
front facing to change gear with
a makeshift lever

3. A Tube spanner (15?) over stem stub
(slightly lengthening the stub...)
and forward facing foot ...
enabled driving near 100km before
finding a welder in Sendelingsdrif

Maybe it has to do with the poor design of the product by the engineers in Solihul?
Flex is overrated

Why did it break ? ...

Gear selection, on this 15 year old vehicle,
esp into 4th has always been a bit awkward/stiff ...
... if you look at the photo s the lever is quite long
(significant moment) and has a ‘ step’ at the bottom to
improve ‘levering-circle’ for gear change ...

cant offer any other reasons
