The GFYS Club

Once upon a time, on a forum far, far away, there was some thread in between the other arbitrary topics about manicures and pedicures. It was a heated thread, and a couple of people got vitriolic about all us folk with crappy habbits - ie: smokers. At that point in time, I'd stopped for about a year. I've started again subsequently, but will probably stop again some time...

One of my favourites on that forum >>, Uncle Peter >>, had vituperously >> gone off<< about how>> smokers >> should be chastised<< and his previous employer << Big Blue>> had forced>> him >> to >> kick << the habit >> and << it >> was >> the best thing << ever >> unless he >> was camping somewhere >> and people parked on >> his spot so that <<< he could >> get angry>> and break >> their stuff>>.

I unfortunately made some comment about the fact that, when I had smoked, that break with a cigarette often was an awesome occasion to get away from the logical problems I was battling with. And often, that break was exactly what was needed. Being away from my computer for a few minutes often just got me thinking in a different direction, and I'd have the issue solved before I even got back to my desk.

As I said earlier, it was a heated thread. And somebody quoted my post about having stopped smoking and merely provided the cryptic acronym: GFYS.

There were many theories about the actual meaning of the acronym. After lots of thoughts about this, Willem and myself decided that it could not possible mean what we thought it meant, and the poster had probably meant "Good For You Sir". Being happy worker bees on that specific forum, we even added the acronym to the "SWAMBO - and other acronyms used on this site" thread. I mean - I would not want other people misunderstanding my meaning when I type GFYS on a thread. In any case, the term GFYS was used regularly on that thread before it was nuked by the powers-that-be (GFYS,D) and on several other threads after that. In fact, it is still used very regularly on various platforms... :D

A month or two later, I received a photograph of Willem sporting a very awesome pink t-shirt. And shortly after that, I received my version in the post. And so the GFYS club was born.

I don't want to post Willem's photograph here - POPI and such stuff - he can do so if he so wishes.

But this is my GFYS club shirt.

Sorry - it is a strange photograph... I was not aware that a photograph was being taken and I was inspecting my wheelbarrow at the time. Nice wheel barrow - stupid axle design. At this point, I'd asked my neighbour to make me a new axle, but he wanted R450 for it. So I bought a new wheelbarrow. :)

You're zooming in somewhere.

Either it is the baldspot. Which I've had from birth and is steadily growing bigger. I cannot do much about that, and it does not bother me.

Or it is the sticker on the back of the truck. It is a modified one. It is my avatar here, but since that might be a little small to see, it looks like this:

I like it as is. I'll probably not remove it. :)

I can relate to being ostracized bevause you're a smoker....

But if anyone deems to preach to my 47 year old ass about it again I'll just think to myself GFYS - meaning whatever I want it to!

Ironically the guys here are not dicks - don't think we've even had an argument let alone a suspension! (???? Manny?)

Old Ricoffy likes to "Tickle my tits" sometimes - and I'll be sure to GFYS him when he does again .

But we're not a bunch of nannies amd I for one am more than happy to be on the recieving end of either interpretation.

One thing Ian didn't touch on is the fact that one of the main considerations of the GFYS club is to use proper grammar. Much like the titles ultimate trailmaster etc. on this forum, in the GFYS club we refer to it as the coveted Ultimate Frikkie Master.

We try very hard here to NOT do any moderation whatsoever.
You guys are mature enough to 'self moderate'.

We only had ONE person who we kicked off the Forum.
He started a Thread "The VW Up! as a viable Platkar".
I deleted it & informed him Threads must be 4x4/Outdoor/Overland related.
He started a new Thread immediately called "The VW Up! as a viable Platkar".
I deleted it.
So he started a Thread comparing the moderation here to the moderation on other Forums.

At that stage, the pudgy Cape Town Restaurateur had exceeded his usefulness to this Forum & I banned him.
