4X4 on a budget
Two blokes (Shauno and Jocko) have bought each other a cheap 4WD, and they've got to build it up for under $5,000(AUS) in less than 24 hours. (Part1)

I agree, something like this:

Although I doubt that you will be able to get one in good enough nick for 50k.

The one Ricoffy posted is a very old pre-facelift one with nearly 300kkm, for R80k .
I don’t think you’ll find a decent XJ for R50k anymore.

Here is an option.
Some of them had a Merc 3.2 I6 motor with 162 kw & 312 Nm. That’s pretty powerful.
They are a bit low & don’t have a great ground clearance, but they’re as cheap as chips.

There's a brick behind the front wheel of the XJ advertised for 45k. I would stay away from that one

Suzuki SJ410. See a few available for around R50k.
I am convinced that a R50k 4x4 would cost you another R50k to get it reliable. Would then rather spend R100k from the start.

You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4

Their handbrakes never work. I tried for years to get my XJ's one to work. It will hold on a downhill, but not on an uphill. I used to forget about the handbrake and just put it in Park.
