They could have just given me a 7 speed box where 1 is the same as 1Lo & 2 is the same as 2Lo.

The 8 speed box you are talking about has a narrow range of ratios.
You get a far better spread with a hi range abs low range.
I’m trying to imagine you handling a 10 speed manual and now my ribs hurt from laughing ...
Well... that escalated quickly....

your Tuna has 10 speeds . you struggle with a 5 speed shift pattern and an additional lever. I'm trying to imagine you picking the correct gear with a 10 speed manual shift gate or even a manual sequential shift.... a 7 speed 'H pattern' gearbox is quite a thing to deal with....

the standard spread of gears across a box is from around 4:1 for first, and 1:1 for 3rd, 4th or 5th (or even 6th) , with an overdrive for top

the reason that silly diesels required an 8 to 10 speed box is that they have no torque spread. you have to pick the correct gear to keep it in the torque band.

Obviously, as soon as you have a multi speed box, you have to put it into the top range models as well or people start suffering from FOMO.

If you then take those 8 speeds and pretend one is 'Gelande gear' by fitting a low diff ratio, you are really rogering the cat to make it seem like a good idea...

thats why a transfer case is a good idea...

Alex, I agree I have 10 Gears.
5 Lo
5 Hi

But I really only have 7 different ratios.

Nonetheless - just as a chef never uses a Meat Clever, a Bread Knife & a Pairing knife at the same time - I don't drive a ten speed.

When I'm cruising in sublime comfort (I think wafting is pushing it a bit far - so I used cruising) to my destination I use only 5 gears(Hi).
Then, on arrival, I unleash the Lo guys & start Wrangler crushing.

I almost never, ever, use 4Lo or 5Lo - so I only use 3 gears. Mainly Lo 1 & Lo 2.

So I do ALL this & more with 7 cogs...

Powerful motors like Steam Train Engines & D-4D's don't need lots of cogs to get sh!t done!
