Chas is having vehicle problems.

Chas is having vehicle problems on his Botswana trip. Here are two posts he made on the one Land Rover Club WhatsApp group.

As some of you may have heard it looks like Ive had a serious problem on my Td5 130 ... we were travelling from Planet Baobab to Baines Baobab on tarred road at about 80km when motor started to lose power and stutter, large longish puffs of black smoke for maybe 10secs then motor died ...
but retarted and motored to Nxai Gate before giving repeated problems ... would start go for few mins then die ... loud stuttering clanging sound on attempted restarts and smoking warranted ceasing such further attempts....
Will aim to have it towed to Maun to have LR Mechs assess it but theres a fair likilihood itll be a show stopper gor Annie & I though we may look at hiring a pickup ????
We at Baines Baobab at mo & will get back to vehicle at gate to Nxai tomorrow morning. Will check Tutbo Pipe to intercooler and Turbo itself then also otherwisegive it more intense lookover ... but clanging sound on attempte start up is v worrying and suspectmore serious proble maybe failed injector or piston blown etc

Hope he gets his battle ship going for the trip home.

Sounds like a con-rod : I've heard those TD5s will happily run with one leg out of bed.

Ooh, can I flog him a TD5 motor. Comes dressed in a shabby-chic Disco II? 😁

Always sad when a person's loyalty to a lesser brand is tested...

Has anyone got further news on Chas yet. I see he hasn’t commented on the YEF thread

I'm not sure if Chas is aware of this thread that I started. He sent me a WhatsApp message a few days ago.

LR Xtreme have car for assessment .

... but Im beginning to think maybe this:
Can a Faulty FPR Flood All Pistons?
Yes — if the FPR is stuck closed or its diaphragm fails, the following can happen:
• Rail pressure rises well above normal.
• Injectors can deliver too much fuel.
• Because TD5 injectors are precisely timed and calibrated, overpressure can cause all cylinders to receive excess fuel.
Symptoms can include:
• Hard or impossible start
• Black smoke from unburned diesel
• Fuel in the cylinders (“flooding”)
• Engine cutting out after a few seconds (as in your earlier description)
If fuel cannot return to the tank, injectors literally pump more fuel than combustion can handle, and all bores may fill with diesel.
✅ Key takeaway: A faulty FPR can directly cause flooding across all cylinders because it no longer limits rail pressure.

I then asked how he got the Landy home and got this reply.

0n a flat-bed by a long route from Maun via Ghanzi and Pioneer Gate (nr Gaberone) then thru Zeerust and rustenburg to LRxTREME ...
actually about 10-15 % longer but better roads than Groblerbrug route

Hopefully he'll give us more info.

He is right about the route. Wouldn’t want to tow a car trailer from Maun via Grobblersbrug.

Hope you are on the road again soon Chas.
