Let's discuss the Cruiser 105 VX 4.2td

Gents,

Tell me more about this engine.

I know it produces about 150kw and 430NM and it is mated to a 5 speed auto. It is decently specced (cruise control and climate control is basically all I need) and it has an approach angle of 34degrees and a departure of 26 degrees. Also, it has IFS

Anyway, I may be in the market for one.

I guess it boils down to:

1) How reliable are those 4.2tds?

2) Any known issues with the auto-box?

3) What should I be on the look-out for - in other words known faults?

4) I know it is a cruiser, but I have to ask anyways - how good is it off-road?

5) If I can get one (I prefer as standard as possible - call me the ignorant-purist), with FSH and with less than 250k km on the clock for R320k, is that a good buy?

I was under the impression that the 105 had a solid front axle? The 105 basically had a 80 series chassis and axles.
The 100 had IFS.

You're in the market but don't know what you're buying? OK..............

1) The engine is solid. The 1HD-T in our market only put out 123Kw and 352Nm. We never got the 150kW 1HD-FTE as far as I know........if the one you are looking at has the 1HD-FTE, then it is an import
2) Auto is usually the generic Aisin A44x box. Also used in the Lexus.
3) Dunno
4) Dunno, but the Land Cruiser has never been considered useless off-road.
5) Dunno. Looks like a lot of money for an old SUV........

But 105 was the number for the GX, which was solid axle
and 100 the number for the VX, which was IFS.

Note though that the 105 is described as a low cost 100, rather than an upgraded 80 series.
Just because it has solid axles does not make it a worthy successor to the 80 series, which was still the last of the great (and tough) cruisers.
I also think the drive train of the 105 is not as robust as the 80.

I am not sure which diesel engine it had in SA:
If it is the Diesel 1HZ then it is a bit of a "donkey" but still very reliable.
If it is the Diesel 1HD-FTE, then great. LC fans consider this one of Toyota's finest moments. Very reliable and upgradable.
(I think that is what the new "Sooty" and Dirty30 Mark II has)

Alex, I'm going to digress here. I don't see a 105 as being a low cost 100. They're completely different vehicles.

Personal opinion: SFA (as opposed to the IFS 100). But the 105 is also a "great and tough" cruiser but with coil springs as opposed to leaves. As I said, my personal opinion. I've "wheeled" with several of them before. Stock, they're just as capable than a stock Patrol and I seem to recall they have front and rear lockers standard. The Toyota 4.5 EFI also runs rings around the TB45E. Not that it is applicable to this vehicle as it is a 4.2 diesel... I cannot say whether the drive train is weaker than the 80 but I would fathom a guess that the drive train is not nearly as robust as a Patrol drive train...

Also, the motor in question the vehicle that Willem is looking at is a 1HD-FTE.

Anyway, I have always preferred the 1HZ 4.2. I don't really know the 1HD-FTE, that is why I posted this thread.

The 1HD is basically the 1HZ with better pistons, con rods, oil squirters and a redesigned cylinder head for direct injection...........

Thanks Jakes, I appreciate it. I did some research and both SA and Nam got the 1HD-FTE motor in the 100 VX derivative - so it is not an import.

The 105 was more a cost-cut 100 series rather than an upgraded 80 series. This meant that inside, it was much simpler and lacked many of the comforts and luxuries of the normal 100 series.
So it may be wrong too, I do not have the experience of driving one, you had.

Digressing, yes, the 4.5 EFI made much more power than the TB45
But the 4.5 EFI is more comparable to the TB48, since it is twin cam, multi valve, and I think variable cam timing.
And btw, the 4.5 EFI is also a tad heavier on fuel! (if that is possible) - in both cases consumption is written on the door.
