Early Winter trip Crossing the Limpopo Province

#1

Post by Martin de Jager »

Our trip started the 30th April and finished at home on 9th May, total distances planned over 2200km's.
1st Stop Marakele Sanparks . We drove through Brits, roads and conditions not the the best , but driveable. We arrived at around 12h00 in Marakele. The camp was quite full, end of school holidays, but the park and amenities remain in good standard. The roads were muddy and indicated serious erosion.
On Saturday morning Esther and myself drove our first drive, our first sighting a Rhino and her calf, we then drove the mountain route and got chased by old Elephant cow. At first site she raised her alarms and we stopped, then the first charge started, the second one was more serious, causing me to reverse more than a 1 km , down the mountain. I turned around and it carried on for more four kilometers.
I turned back, drove slowly into her sight and she came as if she was playing hide to seek, eventually letting us through, to pass more than four smaller Ellies.
We went up the mountain twice and saw plenty Klipspringers and Vultures. The park is an awesome condition, green and healthy.
Seing that the club will be going there in August.
So not to spoil the expectations of the club, I will share pictures.

Our second part of the trip went via, small places, Lephalale, Marken, Tolme, Blouberg, Vivo, Melkrivier, Masisi, to short of Pafuri Gate. We left camp in Marakele, at 07h30, to arrive in our camp near Masisi at 17h00. A long day in the driver seat and hard as can be. Some gravel to sand. Our destination Nthakeni Bush and River Camp.
The roads was mostly in good condition, closer to Marken and Blouberg and en route to Vivo the conditions was poor and full of potholes.
The Nthakeni Bush and River Camp, was a gem two massive Boabab trees your guards in an awesome quiet and tranquil setting, the cleanest resort I have ever seen or experienced. It all offers all but electricity, and no cellphone coverage.
It offers seven camp sites, a family cottage, and a tented camp. Our camp cost us R500.00 per night for two vehicles. R1500.00 in Total.
This is camp to consider for future, a definite return for me and Esther.

Part three of our trip offers more photographs of some the most beautiful to some of the most threatened. Definitely our most memorable trip.
