Took the Cruiser on the KZN trip.

Only short coming were the lack of sun. Most of the parking during day time of the places we visited were under shade. The 12v system struggled to keep up. Had to idle the engine on a few occasions to help the solar to keep up.

Some other good ideas by friends and me also popped up.

Watch this space for future mods. ;)

Grips, as we discussed at Kosi Bay:
Make the Solar panels detachable so they can be placed in the sun - but this you know.
New Stainless Steel water tank to replace the plastic one, with baffles, lower & wider for better CoG.
Swing out Gas bottle for camp site only use. Swing in when on the road.

So one year later.
To be honest I am not in the mood to post on this thread. The past six months when ever I had some time it were spend on the Cruiser. The aim were to get it ready for an upcoming Bots trip this year in April. Unfortunately I had to cancel at a very late stage due to commitments at my business (submitting an urgent Tender).
Karin & I were really very disappointed as we were looking forward to this trip for some time.

The only good that came out of this is that the Cruiser is now fully kitted to my liking.
I spend the last two weeks behind a computer completing the tender. Decided to take a break last Saturday and paid Fanus my BIL a quick visit on the farm - my first opportunity to fully set up the Cruiser.
I somewhere said that my aim is to setup camp in the region of 5 minutes. According to a very poor video I recorded the first setup took just under 6 minutes. Will make a proper video sometime in the future.

Well I certainly need to state the current outlay of the Cruiser.
I have added a popup rooftop tent, Ostrich wing and a fall down shower cubicle.
Cannot wait to get the opportunity to do a trip with the new setup.

Looks like a comfortable setup!

While I haven't done much overlanding - I am EXTREMELY lazy when it comes to setting up camp!

I want to be comfortable but anything longer than 20 min (for me) is way too long!

Especially if you're on the move every day or so.

Keep it coming - always nice to see other, better setups!

Time to report on the add-ons:
RTT
I had a look at almost every hard-shell popup rooftop tent in SA. There are some real nice one`s but at eyewatering prices. When I built the canopy for the Cruiser I made it 100mm lower than the cab of the Cruiser. The idea was to help with aerodynamics once a rooftop is fitted.

My criteria were;
Setup can be done in a few minutes.
It must be as streamline as possible
Cost mustn't break the bank.
In the end I went for the Tentco hard-shell.
I have used it on several trips now. Takes less than 4 minutes to setup. Around 5 to 7 mins to pack up. I am happy with the quality. Would like to add LED light and USB chargers. As it popsup all 4 corners it gives quite a lot of room.

Awning:
Now the Tentco ostrich wing. Very easy to setup. The first two pack up attempts I could not get it back in the cover. Once you get the right way to roll the canvas it is a 5 minute job. The awning has an alu frame to save weight. It feels flimsy and might be easy to damage. Definitely not the same quality as more expensive products. With care I think it can be good for a few years of service.

Shower Cubicle:
I bought a drop down shower also from Tentco. Must give them credit they gave my quite a good discount on my all Tentco setup products.
You open the cover, drop the canvas and swing and lock the arms and you are ready to shower. Very easy to pack up. Fold in the extensions and rollup the canvas about in about 3 minutes.

Conclusion:
I enjoy my setup and ended more or less what I have planed. To setup camp in under 10 minutes can be achieved.

Grips, two questions:
Do you know the total weight of your rig as you roll out for a trip?

On the Bots trip Fearless was at about 2400kg and the Trailer, with fuel and water, at 1600kg - so 4 tons.

Bugger's 30 year old Kombi Camper Synchro was also around 4 tons albeit in one vehicle no trailer.

Be interested to know what yours is.

2nd question: What suspension upgrades have you done, you have rear leaf springs and I know that, for some reason, you like Ozzie kak like Old Man Emu.
Does the suspension cope with the weight and how does it perform?

Manny I have never had the Cruiser on a weighbridge. I've done some calculations with the weight of items as per manufacturer.

With full water tank it comes to a total of 680kg. Add another 120kg for personal stuff, wood and food. This brings the total at 800kg which is half of the Cruisers 1600kg carrying capacity.

Yes the rear suspension is OME. Have opted for 600kg constant load leaf pack. Impressed with the soft ride the have. In front Iron Man. Bit of a hard ride but work nice offroad. Will in the near future change to OME. OME might be crappy Aussie stuff but they work on a Cruiser. I know a few farmers that have done 200k plus km on them. Have a look at all the pics of the Cruiser loaded. No sagging at the rear so I am well inside the limits of the suspension.
