Pierre, to my understanding, keeping water away will prolong the life of the rooster. (Not being sarcastic here)
I have roosters standing outside permanently, they are rusted. The ones I keep in the garage are almost rust free.
Also, the coating on the metal, as well as the type of metal will play a huge part in attracting rust.

Braai grids rust fast because they are subjected to cycles of intense heat & weather.
What can you do to reduce this?
1. Galvanising - but this renders the metal poisonous on heating.
2. Keeping it away from the weather - as Lessew says, an indoor braai or braai kept inside will last longer.
3. Not cleaning it after use - the grease & fats protect it.
4. If you are going to clean it, oil it (with Olive oil) afterwards.
5. Stainless Steel - a good quality S/S grid will last longer.
My braai stands in the open, I just don't clean it after use - although my new Malawian cleans it.
I must make him stop, but he comes on Thursdays, so it's usually only clean for a day or two.
Ultimately, get a S/S grid, then either don't clean it, or clean it then apply a coat of oil.
If possible, keep it indoors. perhaps wrapped in newspaper in a bag...

Think my Upholsterer must make a nice Water proof zip bag.
That I"ll treat with Spray and Cook and keep the grid oiled - as suggested, with olive oil...

Never water wash your braai grid and leave it wet as ash+water=acid ...
Steel brush the grid and then rub 1/2 onion over it , I've heard ...
I only use a small braai grid now and don't really wash it at all but fire clean it red-hot when there's a lot of flame on the fire ...
For larger braai units a geyser tray is a good top to stop water wetting/collecting in a braai...

Chas, most of the stuff you camp with would disintegrate if you washed it...BushWacker wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 9:25 amNever water wash your braai grid and leave it wet as ash+water=acid ...

I think it's time you left for Mud Island and join the other confused people living there.
