Not being facetious but why does the Dakar solely use BF’s exclusively? I get they are the main sponsor but surely the manufactures would go for a tyre that gives them the edge - noting majority is dune driving ?

Have a closer look at what they actually use Mike. What they use isn’t what we can buy, not even the ATs that they use.Mike-PS wrote:Not being facetious but why does the Dakar solely use BF’s exclusively? Point taken XJ - but hopefully if they are that good it we will see it come through into production soon - wishful thinkingXJ Junkie wrote:Have a closer look at what they actually use Mike. My last set of BF AT's didn't last long. Ripped chunks out of them driving rocks.
Will chat to Marten about the 265/70/17 mud's he has

These are the tyres they use for the Dakar. It’s a proper rally raid racing tyre.
My understanding is that they used to use MT’s on the 2wd buggies & ATs on the 4WDs. But now they use this version for both classes.

I wouldn't say they get them for free. It's more likely to be that they are paid for as part of the entry package.
Race tyres like this are far removed from the stuff available to the public. They will look almost identical but the construction usually differs vastly. Those raid tyres get put through stresses that will never be duplicated by your normal offroad user. The compound of the tread will be designed to last just more than the longest stage of the rally raid.
The humble person makes room for progress; the arrogant person believes they’re already there.

What? Do they have to do something with all the excess rubber returned to them.
