2020 YEF Discussion Thread
Our incoming Chairman (subject to my successful rigging of the election), Kurt Gerber, has long felt that the YEF (Year End Function) should be a 'Long Weekend Away" Function.
He has also suggested that we try include the 'forgotten' members who do not live in or near Gauteng.
To this end we decided to have the 2020 YEF somewhere central.
But this posed a problem - we need a long weekend.
There is no suitable long weekend in the last quarter (only in December - which is too late).
So we decided to move it to the long weekend in September.
24 September is a holiday (Heritage Day), if you take Friday 25 September off it gives you four days.
So, having found a weekend near the end of the year we needed a venue.
MartinDJ suggested River Destiny Lodge 15km from Gariep - it's a stunning venue,
BUT! alas, it's fully booked (a Wedding).
So I chatted to Ernie Griesel of Donkerpoort 4x4 & he spoke to the (NEW) management to the Forever Resort at Gariep Dam.
I then called the lady (Maryke) & got everything in motion...
So, I'd like your thoughts on:
2020 YEF Forever Resorts Gariep, long weekend of 24, 25, 26 & 27 September 2020.
Ernie will reopen his 4x4 Trail, Donkerpoort, for us...

Bloemfontein is generally considered the middle of the country.
Gariep is 2 hours past Bloem (6 hours travel)
So, a suggestion.
Aldam (3,5 hours travel) is 1,5 hours from Bloem but closer to Johannesburg and also has a game reserve plus all the facilities that Gariep has.
Might find you get a better turnout with less travel.

We'd be happy with the extra travelling to Gariep Dam. I'll just have to see about leave for the proposed dates. Hopefully I'll still have a job by the end of year.

But there aren't any major 4x4 trails nearby.
There is a route called Bundu. Every year the "Ysbeertjie" is held there and the have a 4x4 "play" route. Has one or two obstackes that could be a little challenging.
About 20km from Aldam.
But Gariep is fine fir me - assuming I can make it on that weekend

This could also be a very good option with shorter travel distance.BillyH wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 5:45 pmBloemfontein is generally considered the middle of the country.

I drove to Gariep and back in early Jan. It was very painless and comfortable, not to mention economical, in my awesome “Massive flexing” Pajero. I’m good with either option.
