I do agree that the GM 14 bolt Diffs are king. In my opinion the strongest local diff`s are found in Patrols.
But even they are not equal as very few models came with the H260. Patroll guys rs are sort of shy to admit that they only have an H233 at the back [emoji38]

Back to the Dana`s: When I built the Yank Ranger I spent many hours researching diff`s. Reading many forums etc. I got the impression that they were instructable. Maybe it just my bad luck with them not living up to my expectations. Yes they are 40 years old but I carefully rebuild them - all seals and bearings get replaced etc.

When it comes to my 4x4'ing style I irritate the likes of my friends Manny and Quack (to name a few here on the forum). I go too slow according to them. The Dana 44 was not damaged where full power was applied. The side shaft snapped on the 60 - yes I did feed in the loud pedal but nothing extreme. But, for the 60, I will take the blame.

Attached is a video where I damaged the pinion on the Dana 44. You can built super strong Dana`s all the parts are available off the shelf, but that amounts to serious cash lay outs.

1.32 in the video :o

Yes, the troll stuff is quite stout for what it is. A Dana 44 has its limitations, especially the short shaft and where it is a high pinion (as liked by Ford :) and now Jeep) design. The pinion literally moves under power and strain, causing chipping of the teeth.

The 14 bolt overcomes this by using a third pinion bearing on the crown/ring end, 'after' the pinion teeth.

OK, I've revised posts 4, 6 & 10.

It seems the Mitsubishi Parts guy gave bad advice.
Morgan of Parthunt was right & Gearmax was worse than I thought.

Basically, the Colt's OEM diff was $.55:1, Gearmax fitted the 4.11:1 from a Hilux (badly) so we are now back to the original, shorter gearing.

The vehicle is back on the road & so far, so good...

Just to be clear here.

The Toyota parts were the problem in your Mitsubishi?

No... the shit workmanship by Gearmax caused the Hilux spider gear to fail despite the fitment of the Hilux parts in the worlds least powerful diesel bakkie.. .the fact that an under-powered bakkie broke the Hilux diff is testament to the depths of Gearmax's shitness....

Did I hear you say that The Toyota parts aren’t up to the moooohassive torque of the 2800 normally aspirated Mitsubishi diesel?

Manny, I know the Colt might hold some sentimental value for you, but as I read this thread I am reminded of an old incident relating to a wheel barrow and the replacement of its axle...

Cut your losses.

The Wheelbarrow Tale you referred to was when a guy spent the same amount on fixing his old Barrow as a new one would have cost.

My story is somewhat different:
I spent R7 000 fixing the Diff on a...
Vehicle worth over R30 000 that would cost me...
R260 000 to replace.

However, I take your point, in fact in October last year I bought a KB250 D, this was bought to replace the Colt.
Fitting the; Alarm, Immobilizer, Radio, Blueteeth, Spare Wheel Lock, Branding, Canopy & Roof Rack Carrier took until April.
In fact, the KB250 D only finally came on stream while the Colt was down with the broken Diff...

However, I've expanded slightly & need to keep the Colt in service.

If Cyril lives up to his promises & all goes well, I'll buy another D-Max250 D in a year or two & hopefully then, be finally rid of the Colt, which will have over 300 000km by then...
