Trail / Resort - Location
Heidelberg 4×4 - Lammergeyer Farm https://www.4x4kungwini.co.za/ - Vlakfontein 523, JR, Bronkhorstspruit
Grootwater 4x4 - About 50 Km from Ellisra(Lephalale)
SANDWANI ADVENTURE 4X4 TRAIL - 15km from Cullinan - This has crap camping & the trail is not light - we had our first extreme trail day there. https://www.bergenrivier.co.za/index.html - 40km NE of Witbank and Bronkhorstspruit - This venue sucks! Trust me.
Serendipity Eco Trails - Tierkloof farm, Mookgophong
Berakah 4x4 - Parys - Berakah is a Terror trail, it's actually a grade 3 or, maybe 4 - but not what you are looking for. But you should try it...
Rhino Park Adventures - Rayton, 11 km / Pretoria 35 km
Piesangkloof 4×4 Trails
B'sorah (4x4 Safari Bush Camp) - Lat -25.845954 Long 27.777850

I would add places like:
* Barnardsvlei near Mooi Nooi where we had last year's AGM
* Marekele near Thabazimbi
* The places near Lesotho/Clarens (3 hours drive) like Moolmanshoek, Mieringspoort & Rebellie!
You could also make an effort & make your own up... Hedgehog did this a few years back.
He arranged a Berg en Dal trip; we slept at De Wildt on Friday & on Saturday we took a dirt road route to Karee Krans...
So Manny and Kurt get a bit peeved when I mentioned, all we do is extreme trails and F*up up our rigs. I get this awesome club does cater for overlanders, but twice a year and taking a week or two weeks off is not always convenient in this day and age.
Mike, we have done many of these, over 2 or 3 days. The most recent was DiBus Stop near Clarens.
But I get what you want (even though you did not spit it out):
* Within 3 hours of JHB/PTA
* Must have great camping.
* Wildlife will be preferred.
* Must include a light trail or overland route.

Never knew they had wild camping - very interesting - I suppose not as intense as Bots but sounds very intriguing

We have camped at a place called Mooi Plasie, right next to the river. Only facility is a Long Drop. No fence, no power, bring your own water. Fantastic weekend. It's small and caters for about 5 or 6 camps, tents or trailers.
Im +100% for weekend camping and longer overlanding ... count me in !
I think one can recognise different
categories:
Wild Camping eg along Orange in N Cape
V Basic eg CKGR campsites
Basic eg 3 Provs
Good Facilities eg many Dinokeng
etc
etc
Full Facilities eg Caravan Parks
Sites come
+\- ablutions
+\- water & electricity
+\- fenced camp areas
+\- access roads limited to 4*4s
+\- 1, 2, 3, 4 etc hrs from Joburg
+\- on site mngmt and or guards
etc etc
To my mind the best are wild
relatively inaccessible
relatively under infrastructured
big 5 areas etc
where nature prevails
and other campers
are nature lovers ...
more than infrastructure seekers etc
... but as said Im generally into
weekend camps away and overlanding
... Famous Fiver VoorLoper ...
... Veni Vidi Vici ...
