Passes Trip 2018: Passes of the Eastern Cape

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

What? Eastern Cape 5 Passes Trip

Why? Because we can ;D

Where? Rhodes and surrounds in the Eastern Cape, home via Underberg

Who? All paid up members & their families & friends

When? 27 April - 1 May 2018

Work? Friday 27 April is Freedom day, Tuesday 1 May is Workers day. You just need to take Monday 30 April off.

Accommodation? Chalets and/or old rustic houses, towing is not recommended and the temperatures could be prohibitive for sissy folks like Manny

Cost?
1. Entry fee per vehicle - R500
2. Fuel for about 2500km (measured from OR Tambo and back) + toll fees down the N1 and up the N3 from Maritzburg.
3. Accommodation has been booked. The confirmed cost per adult couple is R2200 for the 4 nights. All of this is in self-catering units so budget for all meals & drinks too. Kids will be extra.

We have space for 9 vehicles on this trip, due to accommodation limitations.

Payment into the 4x4AG account secures your booking, R500 for now. Banking Details:
Nedbank Fourways
Account holder : 4x4Action Group
Current Account Number: 1051513812
Branch Code: 168405
Reference: Forum name + EC2018 (i.e. Martindj EC2018)

About the route:
We will travel anti-clockwise around the bottom of Lesotho, going past Sterkspruit, over Lundean’s (or Lundin's) Neck pass, into Rhodes, via Tiffendel, over Naude's Neck pass to Ongeluksnek Pass and then home via Himeville.

The Plan:
Day 1 (27 April) [703km] - Drive to Rhodes via Zastron and over Lundean's Nek pass. Sleep in accommodation in Rhodes. Long day so an early start is essential. Alternatively everyone makes their own way to Zastron and we meet at a set time, for those that wish to break up this leg into two.
Day 2 [299km] - Drive to Barkley East and do Bastervoetpad Pass to Ugie and back to Rhodes to our accommodation via the entire Naude's Neck pass (circular route).
Day 3 [221km] - From Rhodes, drive up to Tiffendel (choice of two routes, east or west) and then across Carlisle's Pass (I think) towards Tenahead Lodge and then continue over the rest of Naude's Neck pass and then into Matatiele for a night's accommodation.
Day 4 [280km] - Today we tackle the Ongeluksnek Pass into Lesotho and back down again. If it is dry, it is passable, if it is wet then apparently it is impassable... we shall see about that Image. We will then make our way to the next stop which is in Himeville.
Day 5 [596km] Today we head home, for those that wish to travel up and down Sani you are welcome but be aware of the time...

Total distance around 2100km, so time in the saddle will be long - bring a sense of humor and extra fuel because a lot of the driving is up and down steep passes resulting in higher consumption of course.

You will need passports to enter Lesotho on the Ongeluksnek Pass although we won’t officially enter the country as we are coming back down and there is no Lesotho border control, from what I have read. Rather be prepared than unprepared.

Trips like this are the main reason that I bought the Disco. Having guys that have a wealth of knowledge to learn from with each outing I go on makes it even better. Going to be a memorable trip.

Morning all,
this will be a trip to remember, the route and passes are difficult as it is, and then we will be driving 9 passes, weather allowed, going to the highest point at 3001m , all the passes will be above 2000m.
what makes it most exciting it's a nice group of people, in McClear I have bought the best Rump Steak ever, quality for a group braai.

Latest update that I have been able to get is that all the passes are open at the moment.
If the weather plays game and doesn't cause any more landslides we should be good to have lots of fun.

Evening all,
this where we will stay day1 and 2 , https://www.dieoupastorie.com/guest-house/; day 3 http://www.resthaven.co.za/;
quoting from my email with Resthaven,
"Hi
Thank you for your enquiry, yes, Ongeluksnek is a fantastic pass which is very scenic. Philip, the owner of Resthaven has much experience with this pass. When it is dry it is do-able, however, if it is very wet it not passable. There are then other alternative passes which Philip can discuss with you, if need be. April is a fairly dry month, though, so it should be a fine.If you like, Philip can also discuss routes and viewpoints with you once you have arrived.
For now, we do have space available @ R420 per person Sharing Bed Only/Self-Cater (Discounted Price)

OPTIONAL

Buffet Breakfast: R120 per person

Buffet Dinner: R190 per person

There is also Self-Catering and Braai Areas if you wish to self-cater. We are not licensed so you may bring your own drinks.

Please let us know whether you would like to go ahead with the booking? Booking can be secured upon 50% Deposit. (2-working-day-cancellation-policy)
Thank you"

Not trying to be funny but that first link takes you to a place near Hartebeespoort. Now my geography ain’t too sharp but last time I had a map out that was nowhere near Rhodes.
