Every single person who has posted so far, except Shane (near Virginia FS), lives in Gauteng...

Ernie will reopen his 4x4 Trail, Donkerpoort, for us...
Just this is worth going down to Gariep in my view, we have played around there for 3+ days, you can do everything from a nice drive to extreme 4x4 driving.

We did the 3 or 4 different routes all depending on the drivers, and still skipped a whole lot of the farm.

I think the intention is good but the reality, as already mentioned, is that 20 families from Gauteng will travel to gariep to find only panda and Ernie joining. I love the concept but don't believe it's practical or economical for the 20.
Peter does make a good point about donkerpoort though

Agree with Anthony on this one , maybe allow a bit more time to test the interest from members out of Gauteng and then make the call.

Sorry guys busy few days.

Yes it would be nice to have it at Gariep, but it is still roughly 450km for us(JHB IS under 300km).

Bottom line is if there is not at least 20% non Gautenger's i agree that it is not feasible. In that case stick with Uithoek/lesoba or some place here.

Garieps too far - even for a long weekend. 4 hours of driving is pushing it and Gariep is 6+ hours of driving. You still have to setup tents/Vans/Trailers, get food ready for the kids...

This place, as an example, is not bad:

There is Rust de Winter as well. Even the place we went to last year was good. Keep to that type of place and almost everyone can be happy.
Cheese, canals and mud. Flattest country in the world. Wish they had 4x4'ing here

If we stick to around GP there is Ezemvelo nature reserve. It's in a direction we haven't travelled to and very close to both Jo-burg and Pretoria.

Sorry Paul but that place is nice for a quiet weekend. No pool for kids. No noise after 22h00. No music. Not suitable for yef.

There are some very nice camping sites in the Berg area 4 to 4.5 hours drive from JHB.
Lahlahnati
Mahai
Dragons Peak
Mountain Splendour.
There are more
Also consider Mountain Sanctuary near Rustenburg
