Event Poll - Thread One of Two

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

Following from a few 'Off Forum' discussions...

Currently we have (what I think are) a nice spread of events throughout a year.
We do:
* Educational (like the Intro to 4x4 Training Day or the Weighbridge Day).
* Conventional 4x4 Lite days (ike Hennops or De Wildt).
* Extreme 4x4 Days (about 3 a year).
* Camping (Like at the AGM or YEF or Di Bus Stop etc.)
* Overlanding (like the Orange River, Namaqua Richtersveld Trip we did last month).
* Adventure (like River Trip).

Here is what we did in 2018:
2018 Calendar
1) 3 Provinces (Volksrust): 9-11 February
2) AGM (Barnardsvlei 4x4): 3 March
3) RFAD (Base 4): 10 March
4) Passes Trip (Eastern Cape): 27April – 1 May
5) Introduction to 4x4 (TBD): 30 June
6) River Trip (Giyani): 9-12 August
7) Skid Pan day (Redstar Raceway): 19 August
8) Family Weekend @ Dibus Stop Eastern Free State: 22-24 September
9) Year End Function Olifants River Lodge: 24-25 November

Here's what's we've done in 2019, so far...

1. 23 February 23 - Weighbridge Day - Martin De Jager
* 16 March 2019 AGM
2. 19 April to 1 May – Richtersveld trip - Andreas Ropertz & Kurt Gerber
We also have;
3. 15 to 17 June – Blouberg Trip - Andreas Ropertz
4. 8 to 12 August - Baboons Pass - Martin De Jager
6. 9 to 10 November - Year End Function - All
Coming up....

What I would like, is for guys to make suggestions of other events you'd like to see.
WARNING: Generally gyuys suggest ideas that require enormous amounts of arranging.
Be aware you may be asked to arrange it, if you suggest it...

Here are a few ideas for future events:

1. Potjiekos Cookout.
2. Mountain roads Camp & braai weekend.
3. Namib Trip
4. More 'Lite' 4x4 outings to get the less experienced up to speed.
5. Pure 'Meet n Greet' events, where we meet at a place like Groenkloof or some-such for a braai.
6. ?

Please add to the list...

In a week or two, we'll take the top 10 or 12 ideas & add them to a poll on a new Thread (Thread Two of Two) so members can vote & then we can take the most popular ones & add to the calendar...

One day Event,
Braai up the Mountain in Pretoria, the path is pretty messed up, so it will double up as an Extreme event for Fortuners, Mitsu's and LRs. (R80 Theomartinspoort)

I like the Potjie Kos idea - or a social bring and braai. Maybe a bring and brag and braai where one can show off their 4x4's and what was done on it. Maybe see who is best kitted and they can explain the different options and why they chose them?

With the high costs involved in travelling long distances to venues now, would it be possible to travel to an area where camp is established. This can then be used as a base camp from where groups can then do trails, off road passes or just chill in the camp. If a good base camp can be found then lots of activities can be done there like basics recovery training can be done with some of the group while others do more advanced trails or activities. This would expand on what we did on the Di Bus Stop trip as well the AGM.

I like the one day trips we had last year And the previous year, quick morning out and braai after the trail. Not sure if I missed them this year.

It seems like this year there was more weekend trips arranged. I would love to do all the weekend camping but not always possible.

At this stage there are less trips than 2018
but theyre adding up eg
also
Jensen
Bass Lake
etc
Through the year , for a club with our
size (and smaller core of ‘the more active ‘ ...)
we dont do too badly imho.
Im more keen on camping and bush trips
than tricks-on-mountain trails but we do alright.
At some stage (!) I will yet revive that
old Range Rover and will probably be
more keen on trails than I am with my 130 !
... but thats not surprising.
Im also active in LROC so get out
quite a lot ... so no complaints there.
If we go away need to look at travel time to
destination more than distance ... getting past Pretoria on Fri for me is at least 45min more.
All for now... thinking ... will come back
later with more specific recommendations.

One thing I think we should look at is a recovery training day, in the correct environment, not on flat ground.

An assessment of what we carry i.e. I have snapped a strap towing a Golf, the only unrated strap I had but was bought long ago and was sold as a 3T strap. Luckily no damage.
What other potential dangerous gear do we carry.

Safety - your last trip comes to mind, as well as what we allow to be attached to our 4x4's and the inspection there off, what and where.

The list goes on.

I think there are members who have not taken part in serious recoveries that have no idea of the forces involved

I have not been joining trips and events lately due to personal reasons. Hopefully this will be sorted out by end of June !
I have also just started a new job , which , if all goes well , will give me the opportunity to join in more weekend trips. Say at least one weekend a month.

So its pointless me giving any suggestions at this stage ;) ;)

Will keep an eye on future 4x4 events , I really miss 4x4ing
