I'll never forget this image in my mind:
De Hoop.
Hot day.
Three big baboons (out of a troop nearly 50 strong) sitting on big rocks in the Orange river on the Namibian side, looking across at our camp site.
A meter or so into the river on the South African side, into water up to his shoulders, was Martin, staring the baboons down.
I turned & said "We have a Mexican stand-off, whoever flinches first, wins!".
Martin won, the Baboons then swam upstream & crossed over where we couldn't see them...
"No one ever got stuck - in mid air!"

Inspecting the CV on removal it fell on the ground in pieces, we inspected the spline and circlip , the spline was severely worn, possible damage from when I did 3 Provinces, the circlip was hardly visible.

the reality , CV repair shops should declare a damaged spline.

I Then made the call and ordered a new complete side shaft out of Cape Town, it arrived overnight and it was fitted, we were again mobile and on the move by 11h00 the following morning.

I think ? CVs normally fail when rubber boot
torn or broken letting grit into articulating
area .
... then get clear forewarning via
clicking sound esp on turning esp
when reversing ?
but like anything can be overstressed !
and fail ...

Marthin was Lucky as I suspect the cage broke and the shaft was still in the Outer hosing keeping the shaft center and able to turn centralized without coming out

Very lucky, any further problems would have left us stranded, and not even able to get back to Springbok,

I have not seen the Brokenparts that came out

But On the vW Kombi if they break cv’s often just the Cage break

With Marthin I suspect that

I was laying In front of the Vehicle while Martin moved forward and back and saw everything turning slight offset but safe intact not broken cv boot at all so no need to Remove and make a plan on the Outer side

Bugger, your last photo I believe gives all the answers, I could hardly see the circlip, I believe the shaft pulled out with the serious articulation of my left wheel, and that destructed the cage.

I've snapped two sideshafts on Fearless.
The first was the Original one, the 2nd was a used bent one the scum at SAC fitted instead of replacing a torn CV. It lasted 4400km.
Both snapped on an uphill obstacle (like Martin's) when I applied gas to gain momentum (as happened to Martin) in both cases there was no warning, just a sudden loss of forward progress.
In both cases I heard nothing but people outside heard a loud crack.
In both cases the side shaft snapped near the CV....
