I decided to join the YEF at a late stage. Had contact with Manny around camping spots. The plan was to hop into the Cruiser sometime Friday
afternoon.
The weekend before last I took my Mother to visit family from Australia in Springbok. Plan was that she would stay with her sister till 15th of December. Unfortunately her sister were hospitalized. Long story short I had pick up my mother on Saturday. Left at 4:00 in the morning and were back in Kathu by 15:30.
Sorry will try again next year.

Well if all your free weekends are already planned a year ahead from now you are sure to miss the next year end function so I hope you don’t mind if we organise it towards the end of next year.

I have arranged over 120 4x4 Outings & Events over the past 12 years since I bought a 4x4.
Before that I arranged many, many, many social outings.
Let me tell you what I, the Lone Arranger, have learnt over my many years of organising:
I used to arrange F1 events, we would take turns hosting.
There were strafdoppe if your driver did certain things like being overtaken, spinning, having a long fuel stop etc.
The shooters & food had to match the event, so the German GP you made German food & had Schnapps as a shooter etc.
It was huge fun. I did it for 4 years. Shumi was at his peak back then.
But everyone started jostling to host this or that GP, guys were slow to RSVP etc. No one ever said thank you.
So after 4 years I said fuggit & stopped arranging.
For years the other guys were dumbfounded why it stopped. One of the biggest pains in the arse once said to ME
"Why did we stop doing the F1 GP's? it was great fun, WE should start it again". What a PRICK!
These A-holes thought it 'just happened' oblivious to the amount of work that went in to it.
I once arranged a big braai, Brod asked me to move it on 2 weeks, giving a few reasons why I should.
I moved it. Brod didn't pitch.
This was our TENTH 4x4 AG YEF.
Every year, after the event, at least one person, seeing that they missed out, blames the Club for the fact that they couldn't attend. Every. Year.
We used to have these 4X4ag Year End Functions in early November - guys bitched & moaned: it clashed with corporate Christmas parties, it clashes with Matric Dances, it clashes with exams.
I moved it to early December - guys bitched & moaned: too close to the holidays, they need to save money, they need to pack that weekend.
So now I choose a weekend that suits me. Guys still bitch & moan, but I no longer give a fcuk.
BTW: The date of the YEF was posted 12 & 1/2 months (1 year 2 weeks) in advance. Here is proof:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1391
But no matter how far in advance you announce the dates, guys will still claim they had prior plans. In fact, my experience has shown that giving more than 3 months notice has ZERO effect on turnout - you can give 10 years notice - it matters not.

all respect ,where is due, for organizers.
Andreas,my free weekends are planed so i don't sit at home.4x4 means nothing if parked under roof.
..as said earlier our paths will cross one day...
now this:

Thanks to everyone that organized (Manny in partcular).
Thanks to Wessel for the Potjie (was a great treat).
Thanks to the sponsor(s) of the straf-doppies (I assume it comes form the 4x4AG largess)
Thanks VERY much Manny for sponsoring the horse riding.
You put a long enduring smile on two kids' faces
As for date clashes, these happen.
Not the organisers fault though.
Just bad luck if you cannot make it...

Hello from a wet, cold, gloomy, muddy, Hertfordshire in the UK.
In the two years I’ve been away it seems nothing has changed.
Except….
Manny has copied me (after mocking me a lot) and grown a beard. I suspect his reason is to hide his second chin.
Anyway, looks like you okes had a good time, it’s good to see
