NORTHERN KZN TRIP 2021

NORTHERN KZN TRIP - Sunday 25th April - Saturday 1st May 2021

So, for some, the premier event of the year has arrived and is open for booking. Do not miss out on this one. It is going to be epic and we will be visiting one of the most beautiful parts of the country plus doing some amazing activities, or lazing on the most magnificent beach.

WHEN

Sunday 25th April - Saturday 1st May 2021
Why these dates you may ask. Well it is about 700km to travel and not all on great roads so some might need more than one day to get there (leave Saturday, arrive Sunday). For those that need to take leave, Tuesday 27th is a holiday.

WHERE

Zilonde Bush Camp at Utshwayelo Kosi Mouth Lodge and Camp

WHO

All paid up members of the 4x4 Action Group

THE BIG QUESTION - HOW MUCH

Rates are R 180 per adult per night and R 90 per child (under 12), with a minimum of R 400 per campsite.
So if just two adults it is R 400 per night.
We are camping for 6 nights. So the minimum amount to be paid is R2400. ie. 6 x R400.
If you have more people going with you adjust accordingly.

THE CAMPSITE

-Zilonde Bush Camp is a rustic bush camp in a natural setting. Each campsite is under its own tree surrounded by grassland.
-Hot showers (provided by donkey) and flushing toilets are available at the central ablutions located at Zilonde(not at the main lodge).
-There are also bush showers scattered around the campsites with only cold water.
-Each site will have access to an electric point however some points may be up to 30m from your site. Power points are suitable for fridges, lights, fans and chargers. Please bring gas for cooking and leave electric kettles and hairdryers at home. Power is provided by Eskom, not solar and will be available 24hrs a day. (Eskom dependant) The main lodge runs off solar.
-The access road is beach sand so 4x4 is required.
-The campsite is about 3,5km from the main lodge and beach access. -Water is available and drinkable but untreated.
-Please bring your own braais and grids.
-Manguzi town is 20 km away for supplies.

ACTIVITIES

-Beach
-Fishing (usual permits required)
-Snorkelling (sea and estuary)
-Boat Cruises on the three lakes
-Fishing Charters on the lake
-Tour of the Tsonga people’s fish traps
-Hiking
-Canoe Safari on the estuary
-Tembe Elephant Park
-Bhanga Nek and Black Rock
-Possible day trip to Ponte Do Ouro Mozambique(COVID protocols dependant)
Please see the website for costs of some of these activities.
I know people will ask what we will do each day. That will depend on many factors. Size of group, weather on the day, availability of activities to mention a few. It is pointless reserving a beach day now but on the day it is raining. It may also be necessary to divide the group to do the Bhanga Nek trip as permits need to be obtained. Some people may not want to go to Ponte due to COVID protocols.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

This is an extremely environmentally sensitive area and as the 4x4 Action Group it would be nice to be able to assist in keeping it this way. I have spoken to lodge management and we will probably do a clean up of the beach area on the far side of the river near the reef where people snorkel. Please bring an extra black bag or two.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Here is a YouTube clip of the venue.

https://youtu.be/EnZpmvH9DR0

You can also look at their Facebook Page for additional photos.

ELECTRICITY

Zilonde (the camp where we are staying) has power supplied by Eskom. Power is normally available 24hrs a day (Except for normal outages/load shedding). The campsites are spread out far apart from each other so please bring long extension cords.

ABLUTIONS

There are hot water showers, with the hot water supplied by a donkey as well as flushing toilets at the central ablution block at Zilonde (where we are staying). There is no need to go to the main lodge for hot water.
Bush showers (only cold water) are also scattered around the campsites.

ORRA:
Switch on to Channel 3 as you leave home...

Below directions to Zilonde as received form the venue:

Directions from Johannesburg: Take N17 toll road East to Ermelo via Leandra and Bethal. Take N2 to Piet Retief and then Pongola. 40km after Pongola turn left to Jozini. Immediately after going through Jozini the road forks – take the left fork, go over the dam wall and continue north. 40km after the dam wall at the T-junction turn right (not left to Ingwavuma) and travel a further 70km to Emanguzi (KwanGwanase)/ Kosi Bay. From Emanguzi (KwanGwanase) travel 15km on R22 (all tar) towards Mozambique border post (do not turn off right at Kosi Bay Camp sign). Turn right onto a good gravel road (600m before border post), sing says Kosi Mouth. Travel about 4 km to Utshwayelo Lodge & Camp. Just before reaching Utshwayelo Lodge follow the sign to the left to Zilonde Bush Camp. Continue to follow the signs for 3km until you reach the bush camp on the right hand side.

Unfortunately we're going to have to sit this one out this time around.
The timing really sucks for us due to my work and pay situation.
Enjoy it guys.

There are chalets, however the 4x4 AG is an outdoor activity group and as such we encourage the enjoyment of the outdoors. Last years cancelled trip was also organised as a camping only trip.

The chalets are 3,5km away form the campsite.

Should you want to book a chalet please book direct with the resort.

The problem with staying in a Chalet is you basically won't be on the same trip.
I've had this before & the Chaletiers were basically not seen by the campers.

I've camped with both of you, Renier & Bugger - why do you want a Chalet?
