Lost Horizons Clean Up Day..

#1

Post by Mad Manny »

Hi guys!
We need to clean up the Lost Horizons track in preparation for the AGM.

Where?: Lost Horizons - where the AGM will be held

When?: Saturday 9 March

Time?: 09:00

Bring?: Refreshments, Axe, Spade, Machete/Panga, Bow Saw.

Who?: Anyone

Cost?: Nothing, just your blood sweat & tears.

FAStupidQ's:
1. Why leave it for the last weekend?
Because I was 4x4'ing @ Donkerpoort4x4 this past weekend.
I had the Weighbridge day the weekend before that.
Doing it earlier would have been pointless as it would just regrow.

2. WIIFM?
Not much, but it would greatly help me & thereby your club.

3. What happens if no one volunteers?
AntonB & I will try do it ourselves.

Hi guys. The clean up won't take long, if we start let's say 9h30 10h00 I guess we can be finished by 15h00 depend on the numbers helping.
We don't need to make or create a new route, we going to cut branches and grass.
I will bring my big bushcutter, saw and panga. Gloves will help.

I will ask Jacques the owner to give us 2 workers to help.

Hope to see see you soon

Anton

Can't make it sorry. Have to work to have next weekend off.

OK, the four of us met @ Lost Horizons @ 08;30.
We spoke to Jacques of Lost Horizons, he had already cleared much of the track, but there were a few problem areas.

We headed off to the Bridges & Beyond section, which is the 2nd section.
It took some serious negotiation to get under the bridges - the trail was very wet & very slippery.
We even had to use the winch on exciting the river.
We then found the section that had not been done & the four of us started clearing, we must have carved a swathe 300m or 400m long about 3 meters wide... it was hard sweaty work.

Then we headed back to the start - here Jacques of lost Horizons had already cut back trees etc.
Emile had to leave - he had tickets to the Lions Game @ Ellis Park. It was after 12:00 midday...

The very first obstacle after the river, which I have called the Bodenstein Interchange, was severely washed out & frankly, dangerous.
We then swung picks, hoe's & shovels for 30 minutes & got the obstacle much tamer.
Jean drove up & down top compact the soil.
The next section is a sharp right turn with a steep side slope - this was difficult before, as you slide sideways - but it is much worse now.
We were concerned that vehicles could tip or slide towards the river - so another round of digging and compacting took place.

Then after some testing and winch issues we checked out the rest of the track - its all do-able, but will need work in future.
Our focus today was to make sure the track is ready for the AGM.

It was now 14:00 & we dragged our 3 tired sweaty bodies off to Bru House for a beer & Burger - kindly sponsored by 4x4AG...
