Our journey began with a mid morning departure from Johannesburg, strategically timed to avoid the bustling city traffic ensuring a smooth and leisurely drive to the enchanting Booyzynkraal. As we approached, the promise of well-shaded campsites alongside a beautiful river beckoned, setting the stage for a memorable weekend in nature.

Booyzynkraal surpassed expectations with its well-shaded and maintained campsites, complemented by the soothing presence of a beautiful river. The camp's amenities included a closed ablution block featuring a shower, basin, and toilet, with an additional outdoor toilet behind it. On the opposite end, an open ablution facility offered convenience with a shower, toilet, and basin. The use of a donkey system for water heating added a rustic touch to the camping experience. The only drawback, as we later discovered, was the impracticality of the open ablutions during rainfall.

After setting up camp and sharing warm reunions with old friends and welcoming new ones, our collective evening unfolded around a blazing fire. The camaraderie continued as each person prepared their dinner over the flames. As the night progressed, we were treated to a breathtaking yet somewhat intimidating lightning and thunder display, accompanied by heavy rain showers. This spectacular natural performance prompted an early night for everyone.

Saturday dawned with ideal weather as our host, NJ, guided us on an a 4x4 drive. Engaging low range and employing lockers for challenging obstacles, the drive provided incredible views of the river and campsite. Atop the mountain lay another campsite, off the grid and boasting breathtaking views. A stop for refreshments at this secluded spot added to the adventure before descending. The evening brought another round of socializing around the fire, creating lasting memories.

Sunday morning marked the end of our escapade, with a cup of coffee, breakfast, and a sense of contentment. Packing up early, we left Booyzynkraal behind, returning home refreshed and invigorated. The promise to revisit this captivating haven in the future lingered in our minds, a testament to the lasting impact of a weekend filled with nature, friendship, and adventure. Booyzynkraal had etched its place as a retreat worth returning to.
