Do not go to CKGR Piper pan if you are not a well travelled, prepared overlander. You would be stupid to do so.

Mike, there are no facilities, you need to be fully self-sufficient and you are over 6 hours away from water, food, health care etc.
So you need to be in a group and all of you need to be well organized and competent....

Mike, sorry ek kom nou eers terug, vandag in Upington….

N mens gaan mechanical failures he, dis n uitgemaakte saak en iemand moet “boskennis” he. As jou voertuig breek en jy is alleen, good luck dat iemand in 3 dae gaan verbyry.

I have the crappy caravan, which I haul around when I go camping with the kids. To clarify: this is resort camping. Dube / Klein Kariba etc. Although my daughter and the LF's daughter have done a river trip with us, I don't see that happening again soon - they don't like roughing it. When I do more serious stuff (the kids don't like roughing it), I don't tow. But I've never found that I don't have room for beer... Granted, most of these cases it was just me. More recently, Liana also tags along. So we're rather spoiled for space in the Patrol.

Wessel, if you do such distances and speeds I would also ensure safe and sturdy rig above almost all else …

BMW / Merc/ Disco 4 or 5, etc

I'd suggest a second hand Pajero.

Listen, you need to carry a certain amount of stuff:
Fuel for 600km+ at your higher end of consumption) for me that was 100+L for others it was closer to 200L.
Water for 5 days.
Food.
Beers.
Camping equipment.
Wood
Etc.

If you can fit all that in your Jimny - great!
If you prefer to take your Bushlapa - that's also great.

But, no mater what you do, for 5 days in the CKGR, you'll be getting close to 4 tons - unless you camp like a savage & not everyone enjoys that.

Bugger suffered the most vehicle issues & he was not towing.
Obviously, his rig being nearly 40 years old added to his issues.

Avon traveled light, but his TJ & Bushy Trailer also took strain (puncture & tow bar issues).

All Wessel is trying to point out is, CKGR is not River Trip, it's longer & you are not 5km away from civilization.

BTW: We saw many vehicles on our trip, our group had Toyota's (Prado & Fortuner), a Nissan (Patrol), a Jeep (TJ 3.8) & the 40 year old VW bus.
In the tougher places like Nxai pan, Kubu Island & CKGR we saw:
SFA Defenders (but obviously not the NEW Defender)
Various Toyota's.
Merc G Wagens (older models).
a Jimny
a few special builds.

No boutique milk & manure vehicles, obviously...
