I thought it might be useful to start a thread where we can consider recoveries ...
Experiences, Case Studies, situations aspects to consider, techniques etc etc
Will start with this:
This weekend I was at Kungwini and LROC members had a setup Trial arranged along the Goodrich Club trail along the Donga /River course which many of you may know.
A Defender 110 descended down one of the steeply dipping donga banks and in crossing the rocky river course severely bent his tie-rod on hitting a rock with some force...
consequently the front wheels splayed out and vehicle was unmanageable and obstructed following trail users...
It was decided to tow the vehicle forwards up the steep sandy bank and a V8 Disco2 attempted to so extract but lost traction on the sandy surface on the bank ... 110 on steep donga incline,

Two vehicles (110 & Disco) were then used to pull the affected 110 up the bank and this worked easily and was effective.
It was done gently and in a controlled manner.
Note: it was resolved that only a slow tow should be done ... a backward tow-out of the gully was impractical.
In retrospect ... removing the tie rod in-situ straitening and driving out might have been faster!

The trail continued and the tie rod was removed and bent straight in a tree fork and hammered a bit to enable a slow-home return for the vehicle (stressed/weakened tie rods need replacing with new!)
