I stumbled across Ronny Dahl’s latest video where he has demonstrated how badly a towball snatch recovery can go.
Very interesting viewing and essential for any off-road enthusiast who is not aware of the dangers of this stupid technique.

I still want to see someone break one of this. Not promoting towball recoveries. The ones used in the video, have not seen any of them for sale in SA.
I am more worried about some rated recovery point and bumpers that are not installed properly.

Excellent Thread... Should be compulsory viewing.
I joined 4x4Community Forum in 2010, someone told me about the controversy surrounding money raised for a guy called Mudz,
So I went back & read all the posts, a towball smashed his shin bone right through.
It put a fear of snatch recoveries & flying towballs in me that to this day I will not allow anyone to do it.
I also tell others to stand far back & then I move far away. If the others stay - that's their problem...

I remember Mudz, When i stayed down in KZN, we 4x4'd together.
They went to watch a 4x4 event , he was hit by a tow ball, as a spectator

Mudz wasn’t hit by a tow ball. He was hit by a recovery hook.

Ag no man. The guy went out to prove a point. He did his best to break off a tow ball. He tried 8 times and the vehicle being snatched was tied down.
Then he made cuts in the tow ball to help it break off.

Yes. The bolts broke off. It is all about the bolts.

There’s nothing wrong with a recovery hook, provided it’s rated. Same with suitable bolts.

There are recoveries and recoveries - towing a vehicle that is stuck in loose sand usually does not require a snatch recovery - one that's stuck to the chassis in mud or clay is a different situation altogether. I agree with Grips and Junkie - the ball type on the Everest above is a different kettle of fish though.
Assessing the situation properly can save a lot of heartaches and physical pain and damage.
